Hey guys,

I'm trying to finish up this track but i really can't get my head around these super 'ESSED' vocals, tried eqing, tried de essing, tried a combination of the both.

its either super essed or stupidly lispy, i cant get a nice compromise. tried de-essing first, last blah blah. even with no comp its really essy, does this just mean the vocal take is bad??

Does anyone have any hot tips or workarounds?

heres a unmixed awful vocal segment so you know what i'm on about.

try this:

1)create a duplicate of the vocal track.
2)cut all the s sounds from it manually.
3)sit it in the mix with the regular non-edited vocal track.
4)balance/mix/whatever to taste.

A variation of the shred101's suggestion:
Cut S-es (just them) to a separate track, but don't leave the original track unedited. So now you have two tracks - S-es and the rest. Turn down the volume of the 'S' track/or use de-esser. That's it.

the Voxengo Voxformer de-esser has different approaches for de-essing. Maybe one of them could solve your problema. I've been using this channel strip mainly for vocals and it never let me down.
