Has anyone heard this yet!?!? The EP finally came today after weeks of threats to eat my mailwoman's face and I'm doing my best to not run through any of my walls while listening to it. I miss Steve Cloutier's bass presence, the guy they have is good but there isn't much character in his playing. It's awesome to hear Luc Lemay and Steeve Hurdle on something current, aside from being a completely ridiculous songwriters and musicians, they probably have the most underrated vocals in death metal, so painful sounding. Track 2 is 10 minutes and will dissolve cerebrospinal fluid.

New Martyr is pretty fucking intense. Lots of 'we play the same riff, though every accent note is a minor second or third away' guitar interplay that Necrophagist also indulge in, but I'd say more thoroughly composed than just string-of-riffs than them. They approach a sort of Atheist vibe occasionally. The drums could just as well have been programmed though. Great thrashy shouty singer along with more typical open-throated death metal vox.

Negativa I'm torn on. It's definately from the Obscura vein, but there's a lot of 'crumbling, disassembling' going on with the guitars. Perhaps a bit too much emphasis on 'look! I play my guitar weird'? Kind of muted production, though not bad. Long doom-ish song reminds me of Obscura especially. The vocals aren't on par with that album though. I need to listen to this again and again before I can dependably say anything really, these should be taken as first impressions. I can tell I like the martyr right away, but there's no such ease with music by people that write stuff like Obscura.

I like the new Martyr a lot but it doesn't have a lot of replay value for me, not enough catchy riffs to really hook me in but there are a few "MMM!!" momments. Keep in mind that the Negativa demo is written almost entirely by Steeve Hurdle who is responsible for the most dissonant moments of Obscura and a lot of the material was written not long after Obscura was released. Negativa was originally meant to be a side-project of Gorguts continuing further in the direction of Obscura. I'm really looking foward to what will be written in the future with Luc.
