Mind you, I'm in no way a drummer, but I do program them, and I do appreciate good drumming perhaps even more than good guitar playing (my primary instrument of choice), factor in my deep love of all htings Rush related and it was inevitable that I would eventually pick up Neil's new DVD titled "Neil Peart Taking Center Stage: Lifetime of Live Performances". Well it arrived yesterday and all I can say is it is a must have for anyone who appreciates drumming, but also for anyone who loves great musicianship.

Quick description - it's a 7+ hour 3 DVD set that covers the entire setlist from the most recent "Time Machine" tour 2010-2011. In the DVDs he goes over what goes into a live performance from setup, sound check, warm-up, through the whole show. He's had previous DVDs that have dealt with studio recording ("A Work in Progress", creation of his drum solos ("Anatomy of a Drum Solo"), and now live performance. After the intro where he goes over much of getting ready to perform, he then goes through each song highlighting influences, specific features of the song, specific parts that are interesting (fills, rhythms, ...) giving insight into each song. In each song section they have specific parts played at full speed and slow motion, after that they play a drum isolated version of the entire songs live performance from Saratoga NY performance on the tour (with a special drum enhanced mix of the audio). There are other bonus materials I've not completed yet.

They call the man "The Professor" for a reason - his knowledge is awe inspiring and the insight he provides in this DVD set, even as a non-drummer is really amazing. It made me want to create music.

The price of $30 dollars they are asking is almost insane for the effort that must have gone into this video. $10 dollars a DVD - really!

I've been glued to the big TV for the past day watching it. Highly recommended for anyone with any interest in music performed at the highest caliber.

PS - also plenty of views of what is one of the most beautiful drum kits ever made.
