Neverdream 'Souls 26 April 1986'...

Chris:

I didn't really care for this much but I'll bring in some copies. Given your rant about vocalists I can't wait to read your reaction to this disc.

Not Chris, but I'd recommend this CD. It's one of those CD's you have to be in the right mood to play. The vocals will make or break it for you. They do not bother me. His style talks and whispers quite a bit. Music is very cool. Lots of awesome riffs & keys. It's been a grower for me.

I ended up liking this quite a bit. While not as refined, it reminds me a bit of Dark Suns, songwriting-wise anyway.

My review from my 2009 roundup:

Neverdream 'Souls-26 April 1986' – If you're looking for something a little different, this may be for you. These guys took the Pain of Salvation approach to prog metal and really made it something unique. It's a messy sounding album, fitting given the Chernobyl concept. Everything sounds dirty- the processed vocals, the heavily distorted guitar, it even seems to have a subtle static in the background instead of total quiet. Even the saxophone, an instrument I typically find annoying, seems to fit here given it's discordant sound. Songwriting-wise, this is really cool, with a very textured approach and songs that wind around a lot. The worst thing about this is the singer. He has a weak voice and an accent. He stays in a pleasant range for most of it, though, and combined with the distortion on his voice he just fits. Interesting listen.
