04-Dec-08Ace Frehley's Official Web Site Set To Launch December 15th

Original KISS guitarist's Ace Frehley's official web site, AceFrehley.com, will launch on December 15th, 2008 at noon EST. You can currently visit the site — which will contain music, videos and news, as well as art and graphics from Ace himself — to sign up for a mailing list which will give you access to "exclusive information from Ace Frehley."

In an early 2008 interview with Billboard, Frehley stated about his forthcoming solo album, "Basically, I'm trying to get back into the mindset I was in when I did my first solo record [1978's 'Ace Frehley']. That record seemed to have all the elements everybody liked — a real cool instrumental, a hit single, some real heavy rockers, a nice variety of different genres of music."

Among his favorite new tracks are "A Little Below the Angels", hard-rocking "Pain in the Neck" and an instrumental called "Fractured Quantum", which is a follow-up to his previous instrumentals "Fractured Mirror" and "Fractured Too". Another favorite is "groove song" titled "Genghis Khan", which he likens in tone to Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir."

Frehley told MyrtleBeachOnline.com that he's shooting for 12 tracks on his next album, his first in 18 years. Studio work has spanned several months, and some of the songs go back 12 years.

Frehley recently spent time on the road fronting a band that featured second guitarist Derek Hawkins, drummer Scot Coogan (ex-Brides Of Destruction) and bassist Anthony Esposito (ex-Lynch Mob).

I like Ace, I really do. But one has to admit that he was never much of a songwriter, neither with KISS or as a solo artist. So I'm kind of lukewarm in regards to hearing his solo album which he's been working on forever. If he had anything relevant to say as a solo artist, he said it back in 1978 with his solo album, with a great deal of help from his producer I might add.

I actually like Ace's writing style. If not for Kiss he surely wouldn't be the household name he is, but he'd be thought of much differently. I saw him on the recent solo tour, and it struck me for the first time that all of his songs are the weirdest Kiss songs (his solo stuff too). Torpedo Girl, Ozone, Snowblind, so on and so forth. He's kind of like a weird New York Dolls punk-ish kind of writer...in a good way. Like I say, it never dawned on me before, but seeing all his songs crammed together live (both Kiss and solo stuff) on that tour, the arc of his career and writing is kind of strange, and, well, spacey.

He's not an amazing writer, but if not for Kiss, I think he'd be seen as a kind of Iggy Pop type character (neither a compliment, nor a put down).

I never thought of him as a great songwriter, but I do enjoy most of his work. People forget that he wrote (and co-wrote) some really good tunes before he actually made his vocal debut on Love Gun with the classic Shock Me.

Cold Gin, Parasite, Strange Ways, Getaway, and Rock Bottom (w/Paul) were all written by Ace. I also love his contributions on Dynasty, but for most that album is love/hate. As far as his solo stuff, not much past the debut Frehley's Comet album appeals to me.
