I just recently (a month ago) turned 21 and though I have been indulging in different kinds of beer almost every chance I get, I am always looking for recommendations. Extremely local microbrews do me no help unless you are from North Jersey/NYC, the Syracuse/Buffalo area, or the Richmond area. If you can fit those qualifiers, please suggest anything that is good.

I think I might qualify for this thread. I used to hate drinking any kind of alcohol, it tasted like shit to me until less than a year ago when for some reason i suddenly started REALLY liking beer, trying all sorts of different kinds, etc. I mean good beer, like the kind that Avi and Eric talk about.

:(

The Stone stuff is all pretty good, though not totally my cup of tea. A little too heavy on the cascade hops for my tastes.

One great thing about Olympia that I noticed straight-away is that Alaskan beer is available EVERYWHERE and even on draft. Everything they make is great, but I doubt it's readily available out east.

You might be able to find New Belgium beers out there: Fat Tire and so on. Sunshine is probably my favorite of theirs, but they're all good.

The Ommegang beers are local to the NE as well: Hennepin, Rare Vos, etc. All good stuff except for the lambics which I don't care for. Same goes for the Unibroue beers out of Montreal. I love Maudite the best, but the rest of their stuff is good too.

Other stuff local to me: Dick's beer in Centralia is amazing. "Dick's Danger" is their flagship ale that's available all over, but I really liked the "Silky lady" saison as well. Unfortunately they have some of the worst graphic design ever:

Another amazing local brewery out of Seattle is Elysian. Great stuff all around.

Belgian saisons remain my favorite kind of beer overall. Fantome is probably the best easy-to-find brewery I've discovered. That should be available out your way I think.

Yeah, i'll definitely second the stuff mentioned so far- Ommegang and Unibroue are great North American makers of Belgian ales, and you can probably find them fairly cheap. For Belgians, I usually like the brown ales, and Nostradamus is probably a favorite.
I wish we got Stone's stuff here- Arrogant Bastard is the only one i've had, but it's really good. pretty heavy, but lots of hops.
Victory Brewing is located in Pennsylvania I think, and they make really good beers. i think you could find them in your area. the Hop Devil is really good, and if you like porter, try their Storm King Imperial Stout- kind of expensive, but not as much as some Imperial beers like Rogue's.

My only criteria for beer is that it's semi-cold and there's a lot of it.

btw I was one beer away from taking a fat waitress home last night. Thank god for friends.
