NEW CKY

just got home from 10 days in Southern California... spent 5 of them tracking Deron Miller of CKY for his World Under Blood album for Nuclear Blast. He gave me the new CKY CD, "Carver City", and it's very cool.... really digging it. We had a blast hanging and tracking... used my mobile rig in his spare room, borrowed a guitar and PODxt from Michael Keene of The Faceless, captured D.I. (Radial JDV mk3) for re-amping back at home. the album is shaping up quite nicely and will feature two cover songs as well: Malevolent Creation's "Alliance Or War", and Megadeth's "Wake Up Dead". Rhythm tracking is all we did, and Deron KILLED IT!

hadn't decided to borrow the xt and guitar yet when i took this one.

The new record is awesome IMO, even though it's a bit of a grower.

James, very cool you're working with Deron on the World Under Blood album. I was lucky enough to see CKY play during their IDR tour and I remember Deron mentioning something about participating in your Death tribute album. Immense stuff right there!

A buddy of mine is HEAVILY into CKY and invited me to one of their shows in Indianapolis @ a place called Emerson Theater. Its a tiny hole-in-the-wall joint and there were THAT many people crammed in that as soon as it was over I rushed outside for fresh air and sat on the window ledge in front of Abyss Records (tiny death metal cd/album/merch store) which was uncomfortable because they had embedded nails down the length of it to stop people from sitting on the ledge.
Anyway, to cut this story short, the band comes out and people are lining up for autographs and all that sort and the bassist has the nerves to approach me and ask if I want his autograph, which I found to be a bit egotistical since I wasnt standing in line like everyone else. To which I said "No, Thanks. I just want to sit here."

Take that you bastard.

interesting you interpret it as ego... when he was surrounded with people asking for his autograph. perhaps he spotted you alone but quite nearby and made the assumption that you were just being patient... and so he thought, "that guy is cool, he's waiting... i'll get to him now so he can get on his way home".... and you were just being an unperceptive and ungracious twat.

yeah, that sounds about right to me, seeing as how the "egotistical" rock star thing to do would be to ignore everyone and walk straight to the van/bus without giving any autographs at all.

take that you bazzdid. :D

WOAH!!! James Murphy called me an unperceptive and ungracious twat... I dont know whether to break my obituary and testament cds or to giggle like a school girl.

Secondly, are you honestly telling me that you dont find it egotistical to ask someone if they want your autograph? Sure he could have blown all the girls and boys off and got straight on to the bus and that certainly would be blatant ego or just total disregard for his fans. I would gladly buy into the idea that he thought I was cool if I hadn't noticed any of his mannerisms and the way he seemed to be enjoying the attention from all the girls out front. Nothing wrong with enjoying that sort of attention in my book until it goes to a person's head.

P.S. I'm going to tell all my metalhead buddies that James Murphy called me twat.
take that you famous turd.

The difference between him and you is that, he made an effort or a random act of kindness!.
Which by some standards could be seen as; being friendly, caring or interested!.
By which things like conversation having a few laughs, can lead to a beer with the band and a blast of a time in the bar later :kickass:

Just a thought!

Yeah, to be fair that story can be summed up like this:

You went to a tiny venue, to an apparently more-or-less sold out gig, and one of the guys in the headlining band made the mistake of thinking you were a fan.

It's not even interesting to start with, but you then use that two seconds of interaction to make nasty assumptions about the guy who, in all likelihood, thought he was doing you a favour.

Next time you tell this story, you should change the ending to "and he asked ME for MY autograph". It'll be less likely to make internationally renowned soloists bitch at you that way.

Steve

bah, just having some fun with you and offering another perspective on what may have gone down.

... and i'm sure the attention did "go to his head"... but which one?

aaaanyhoo.... i've been "victim" of at least one "fan's" creative misinterpretation of what went down.... the standout example was the time i walked out into the crowd at a very packed Obituary show in Texas and soon was swamped by autograph seekers. i graciously accommodated as many as i could, randomly grabbing the pieces of paper and CD covers that were thrust into my face, not even really having a chance to look up as all i could really see were hands clutching things to be signed. after a few minutes of this our tour manager came out and grabbed me and lead me backstage, signing the whole way.

cut to the first song of our set about a half hour later and as i step forward to the front of the stage my face is inundated with liquid that instantly burns my eyes a bit... i rushed back to where i had my towel (had just recently heard a story of someone hurling car battery acid at a performer on stage) and wiped off my face.... luckily as i was wiping i could smell that it was only beer, so i went right back to playing, barely missing a few bars. other people in the crowd pointed out the offender who glared at me defiantly.

after the show i decided to find out what the guy's problem was, so i immediately walked right out to him... just in time to save him from being beaten up by other fans who had seen him throw the beer in my face. i asked him why he had felt that necessary and he took on a hurt tone of voice and whining-ly stated that i had blatantly ignored him when i was signing autographs earlier.

right.

like i had ignored HIM, of all the anonymous hands holding up items to be signed that i didn't make it to before the tour manager nabbed me, i specifically ignored HIS... a guy i had never met in my life. talk about delusions of grandeur.

i've noticed over the years that some people see "rock star" behavior by default whenever they are exposed to "famous" musicians. it's often far more a frame of mind of that type of viewER than it is any actual actions of the viewEE.

just sayin'.... put yourself in his shoes.

take that you.... you.... you facehead!

I've always thought that Bitter Beings song was pretty cool.
Never listened to any else they did..now check their myspace, and I was surprised...in a good way..

Remember hearing CKY for the first time with this exact song (quite bitter beings) in the CKY videos (mostly goofin' around + skateboard videos, that kinda preceded the whole JACKASS thing), and really liked it.

Another badass song from them is "flesh into gear".

Listening to the new one once again, it has really grown on me, i really like it.

Really digging this new album. The production in it is very intersting. It has this huge arena-rock sound to it with lots of delays, verb, and keyboards. It really works, though.
