The Eagles always seemed to be on in the background of my youth: rock enough for my dad, country enough for my mom.
My wife and I were discussing comebacks and farewell tours and such, and I mentioned that, even if you don't like them (which my wife doesn't) The Stones have been creating new music for a long, long time. Unlike, I said, The Eagles. Well, I'm glad to hear I won't be able to use them as an example anymore of a band living off their back catalog into their old age, throwing a farewell tour of old material whenever they need some extra dough.
the stones may have been making records all these years, but honestly, how many of them are good records. certainly nothing they've done in the past 30 is of the caliber of let it bleed, exile on main street, or beggars banquet. however this isn't an isolated situation, lots of bands hang on maybe for a couple too many records ahem metallica, aerosmith.
sometimes a band should recognize that their relevance as far as recording new material has passed and should only continue their careers touring with their back catalogues. there are very few bands out there who continue to create new new and interesting music for decades.
which now brings me to the eagles. i'm not saying i wouldn't want to hear a new eagles record, but all i'm saying is it won't be desperado, hotel california or even the long run, they've been apart for much too long. let's just hope i'll never say these kinds of things about opeth, or U2 or any other band i like.
that's not at all what i said
not living in the past/resting on your laurels/living off your back catalog
They aren't doing it because they have to, they are doing because they want to. A band like the Eagles have released more than enough quality material over the years and if they want to stick to back catalog, then I'm sure every gig will sell out anyway. The point is, they do what they enjoy, whether its writing new material or just performing old material live. Their reputation, fanbase and success has allowed them to do so, and I think if a band has reached that point in their careers where money is no longer a motivator at all and its only about music and the fun of it, you can only take your hat off to them.
