Frontwoman Yoshiko Ohara conjures both Diamanda Galas and Jarboe with her banshee-like screams, howls and vocal exorcisms. Theres no doubt Summon is a masterpiece of modern experimentalist doom abstraction, and it can now be enjoyed on four sides of wax.

Hammers of Misfortune return again with its latest performance piece, Fields / Church of Broken Glass. Master auteur John Cobbett (also of the blackened Ludicra) delivers a work specifically written for the double-vinyl format. Two distinct and separate albums, each with its own theme and aesthetic, joined at the spine. And with the its progressive and overtly 70s sound, it recalls a time when the double-vinyl format meant a unique dual thematic experience rather than a single album that was simply too long for two sides.
On Fields / Church of Broken Glass, Hammers of Misfortune continue with the political allegories and metaphors that were featured prominently on their previous LP, The Locust Years. As with all aspects of the band, a great deal of care was taken with the lyrical presentation of the album, avoiding the usual progressive and metal cliches. The sound goes further into the vintage sound of 1970s space travelers like Hawkwind, and the organ/keyboard/piano elements and female vocals feature more prominently then ever. Additionally, new singer Patrick Goodwin ably fills previous lead vocalist Mike Scalzis large shoes with a voice perfectly suited to the warmer, analog vibe of the newer songs.
A new Hammers of Misfortune record is always an event for the bands vast worldwide following. Only one previous Hammers LP has actually been pressed to vinyl, and with the arrival of Fields / Church of Broken Glass on the deluxe double-LP format, the band is sure to sate the appetite of their vinyl-starved fans around the globe and attract additional converts to their theater of the politically absurd.

Oppressive sludge, riff oriented stoner, laid-back doom and a slight touch of coarse funeral doom - they're all here but none of them in a dominant role. Pulsa diNura is the soundtrack of brimstone rain lashing from the sky while avoiding easy classifications and mannerisms. Two demos and years of work have resulted in seven tracks of madness, gloom and groove . The trademark heavy and warm soundscape of the demos is still present in an even more refined wall of sound with clear, balanced and dynamic finishing to strike well placed licks upon the skins of closed minded zombies.

On The Coronation, the two elements that make up the current Laudanum sound, punishing, bruised sludge doom and bleak industrial noise experiments, are fused ever more tightly together into a cohesive soundtrack for the slow collapse of modern life and culture. The intense low frequency pummel of Wilkinsons bass rumble is itself an apparent cause for some of this collapse, such is its massive earth-shaking power. Beckys crushing drum beats rival Dale Crover in sheer intensity and brute force. Judds repetitive stone slab riffs carrying the weight of the world, and Mistereks vocals, colliding with Beckys, coating the whole thing with the mournful, evil magick of lifes coming oppression. The two 20+ minutes tracks contained on this self-titled collaboration have a less accessible vibe then the Jesu-like track on last years Christ Send Light EP. There are no vocals to be heard. They are comprised in equal parts of Nadjas fuzzed-out, lurching and hazy dream-doom, and BBAs razor-sharp metallic riff-shards. Extended passages of riff-static noise bleeds one track into the next while deep space eerieness looms ever present in the shadows. Finally the whole thing collapses under the weight of its own self-created black hole. This is the end.

The sound occupies a dense space where the heavy, metallic drone sound of Black Boned Angel intersects with the minimalist string arrangements of Phillip Glass and the more ambient doom tendencies of Japans Corrupted. With its use of violin textures, the album sounds as much like a classical movement as an art-doom LP. Samothrace plays ultra heavy doom with harsh alcohol-soaked vocals. And yet a somber melodic sense also permeates the 4 long tracks on Lifes Trade. Not in the overused, weepy Euro-doom tradition, but distinctly Midwestern, soulful and blues inflected. The songs shimmer with desperation, hopelessness and pain. Awkward Hearts is both world weary for the plight of the oppressed and also intensely personal. The melodic interplay of guitarist Bryan Spinks and Renata Castagna is distinct in doom played this heavy and each song is meticulously crafted for maximum emotional impact.
