OK, the CD isn't out for another 3 weeks, but it's available for download now(Amazon).
I've been listening to it nonstop since Saturday, and some of it I just fucking hate. It sounds like Aaron has reduced his lyric-writing to a sad rhyming game. Yes, I know that writing lyrics is hard, but there's so much rhyming that I'm becoming obsessed with it.
Compare
Two Winters Only (from Angel/Dark River album)
What is it you hope for, even though you are dying?
And even though life is closing your tiny eyes
Why did I leave them all?
I should be with them to die in the same place
The pain I think, should go on forever. For always
But no. Not mine. Not now. My life now begins
with
Deeper Down (Deathless Kings album)
The unforgiving wind
searches
And lashes me like a whip
The self-pity overwhelms me
My heart sinks like a ship
The beginning of The Lies I Sire just seems empty. A lot of the album feels empty.
There ARE some things that I did like. It sounds like Katie the keyboard chick has learned to play violin, and wanted to show that off on this album. The violin riffs aren't very complicated, but that's ok. It's cool to hear violin in MDB songs again. There are also a few songs with Aaron singing with a chick. It sounds great. The female vocals aren't operatic or over the top or even particularly high-pitched. But that dynamic is really nice to hear.
Bring Me Victory is a great song, and I find myself humming it and wanting to hear it again.
A Chapter in Loathing starts with the riff that ended The Blood, The Wine, The Roses.
I'm listening to it as I write this, and every time makes a lame rhyme, I want to take a point away, but if I did that, the album would score -642 on a scale from 1 to 100.
