New reviews from me!

From the Enid review:

"If you’ve heard Arcane Sun, you’ll know what a moving piano piece sounds like."

:kickass:

I like Enid. They aren't the best in their field, but they do what they do quite well. This new one is actually their 4th full length. THe first one is well executed Summoning worship. After that is when the classical moments started making their way into the music.

I can't wait to hear the new Great Deceiver. But is that the cover art? Yikes!

The Great Deceiver's music is pretty cool. The first track, "Today" is brilliant - really makes me want to turn the volume up, but Lindberg's vocals - :ill: - by track 4, they sound all the same. It's a shame because you can tell the other band members put a lot of effort into writing the songs and riffs, composing and structuring each of them individually, only to have Lindberg put those monotonous screams on top of the music. It detracts from the underlying music IMO. Could have been interesting if it were just some one-off 4 song EP, but a whole album of that gets a tad tiresome.

By the way, have you heard the new In Flames? Is this the direction they're trying to head towards? There are several similarities now that they've dropped all clean vocals/harmonies/choruses, and Anders sticks to the high pitched screams over the 'stop start' riffs.

I'm not sure what to think of that Enid...

I haven't heard the new In Flames, but your description sounds like an improvement over the old stuff.

I guess you're just not a fan of hardcore or The Great Deceiver. I think Lindberg's vocals are perfect for the music. They are actually a welcome addition to the typical hardcore vocalists styles.

I thought Lindberg was really good on A Venom Well Designed. His vocals for Skitsystem are even more abrasive.

Lindberg's vocals sound the same throughout Slaughter of the Soul, Crowned in Terror, or any of the other albums he sang on. I guess I don't understand what you're saying.

Based on what you're saying here, you might really like the new In Flames. They've definitely picked up on the Great Deceiver-type image as well in the way that they dress!

I guess you're just not a fan of hardcore or The Great Deceiver.
I just don't know enough about the genre in its entirety, but yes, from what I've heard it's not my cup of tea, but the good thing about having a team with varied tastes is that someone else would normally pick up the promo for review so it wouldn't automatically get bashed. In most cases, it would be NAD or Evil C I think...

Regarding the The Great Deceiver, the music itself is really good. Very interesting and certainly not typical for the hardcore I've come across. The song "Today" has got loads of airplay in the car as of late. Like I said, I can deal with it for about 4 songs and then my mind kinda switches off.

Don't go hunting down Earth Crisis or any other of the one billion hardcore/metalcore bands. Monotonous vocals are pretty much standard, but that's how the fans usually like it.

You should get Converge 'Jane Doe' just to say you've lived a little. That CD will rip your balls off and shove them so far up your ass they pop out your ears. The vocals aren't monotonous, but the music is ABRASIVE with a capital AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

There's no way Jay would like Jane Doe. THere's a slight chance he'd like the sheer aggression, but it's not something he'd play often at all. Cave In's first two albums or Drowningman's "ROck and Roll Killing Machine" are the best newbie hardcore albums I've come across. Hopesfall and Poison the Well are good choices as well.

Cave In and Drowningman helped popularize the term noisecore. I think calling them hardcore is kind of misleading.

I think JayKeeley would also appreciate the insane musicianship on Jane Doe. Then he'd start to throw his own feces at his boss out of sheer insanity from having his balls shoved up his ass.

That Enid release is certainly something different.
Normally this is not my type of music, but this had me hooked on the first listen. Especially the title track and another one, sung in german ... don't remember which track.

I am curious what you guys think of the other promo that I am sure you received from Code .. the CARINOU CD?

My thoughts are on Code's forum on this one ...bleagh!

I'm trying to get to that review soon. I'm just a little confused by it. I don't want to state my opinion until I hear it more.

Hey npearce - are you going to review any of the freebie Vendlus Records albums I sent you? What's that Nothing CD like by the way?
I'm totally swamped in promos right now. I hope to get to the CDs you sent me soon. I'm just way behind. I had work related stuff this weekend, so I didn't get much done. I have several interviews to write up for bands that I promised some coverage to. I feel bad that I can't keep up with all these promos I've been getting lately. UM needs another writer in the US that can help a brotha out, yo!

The Nothing CD is just digital noise and stuff. I only listened to it once, but it serves its purpose. I'll try to get a reviwe up soon.

I need to put all these promos in an organized pile and just dig in every night.

I usually post a review of a CD that a label went out of their way to send me before I review the other stuff that flows in on a daily basis. The Great Deceiver is an example of this. I've never recieved any promos from that label before, so I thought I'd show them that they didn't just throw their money away. Plus it was like a 10 minute review, since I could easily describe the CD/band/etc.
