New setlists on the 'second leg' tour dates?

On these added dates, should we be expecting to hear different songs than on the first go round (namely in the areas already played once), or should we expect to see basically the same set list? I'm sure it would not be easy to work in a whole bunch of new stuff whilst amidst touring so I'm not getting my hopes up, but while I enjoyed X on the first go round, I personally just don't think it would be worth seeing on the second leg if the predominance of PL material is to remain. I guess I could be tempted with Through the Looking Glass - bummed I did not get to see that one on the first leg.

Ahh, just perform V straight through for me, screw making a reasonable set list that pleases many :)

I vote that they work in some of the following "obscure" songs:

Seven
Dressed to Kill
Fallen
The Divine Wings of Tragedy
The Relic
Accolade medley

I also hope they make another date for the Chicagoland area!

There's always going to be a predominance of the current material on just about any given tour. The tour is there to support sales of the current album, so the band is always going to focus on the most recent of their songs..and that goes for just about any band. Obviously there are exceptions, but for the most part that's just how it goes.

That said, I have no idea what their plans are setlist-wise for this next group of dates..I'll ask MJR. :)

I wish they played stuff from the V album. They actually didn't play anything off V when I saw Symphony X. It would be cool if they played fallen or egypt.

Fine by me... I wouldn't mind hearing PL in it's entirety. Eve of Seduction and Revelation were nice additions to the last leg.

Even though I am not a huge fan of PL, I think it would be worth the band entertaining the idea of playing it straight through, and the second leg of this tour would probably be a great time to do so. Like Jax said (which I totally agree with), touring is a marketing effort for the current album first and foremost and X is right in the middle of what I imagine is their biggest surge in popularity - making it particularly important to push the new material. However, the nature of this genre is for albums to be more than just a collection of songs and to tell a story both musically and lyrically with threads of consistency. Even though PL is not technically a concept album it still has that unified feel to it, and little references to material in ex oculus inferni (which acts like an overture) pop up here and there. I think bands like Dream Theater and now Coheed and Cambria who recognize that the dramatic and thematic nature of progressive music encompassed in an album as a whole makes for a more memorable performance are on the right track. With the amount of PL material the guys already have prepared for live performance, doing the PL straight through thing would not be TOO much of a stretch. That is not to say I would necessarily go see PL straight through, but that is just me personally - I think a ton of people would be excited to see that. From a marketing perspective, that and an encore makes fine sense.

Or, if you want to abandon logic and just please me and a few +1 guys, you could perform V straight through ;)

While it is always important to push the new album, there does come a time when a band has developed enough of an exceptional catalog that doing a tour just for the sake of itself and pulling out all the classics has to happen. X is not ready for that yet, simply because their fan base is still growing and they need to pounce on that with new material. When they reach the point that Dream Theater is at now - mostly a core group of loyal fans and the same amount of new fans coming on regardless of a new album or not, keep in mind a great deal of us are waiting for that 'evening with Symphony X' tour to happen. Maybe a good opp is when it is time to make a serious live DVD?

I say play a few older heavy numbers, a ballad, a proggy song, and then PL in its entirety. Then close with Divine Wings. Beautiful.

e.g.

Of Sins and Shadows
Evolution
Accolade II
Church of the Machine

Paradise Lost (full album, with the band actually playing Oculus)

Divine Wings of Tragedy

It's not unreasonable. Revelation practically segues into Divine Wings, anyway.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I went to both and they both kicked ass but I definitely want some new songs. Maybe drop 1 or 2 of the Paradise Lost staples and switch up a few of the interchangeable ones.

I got Egypt last time around (it was beautiful) so I'm hoping the MA date gets Looking Glass if they're still doing those.

DWOT in its entirety would be amazing. They played the end of it after Revelation and it was actually one of the coolest parts of the entire concert. The songs from DWOT obliterate live... so much better than on CD.

Talked to MJR for quite a while last night & he says they will definitely be changing up the setlist a bit for the shows later this year; he asked me to resend him the setlist poll so he could get a feel for what songs folks want to hear the most.

Sadly, there are reasons evident only to the band for why some of the songs we really love just aren't an option in a live setting..it was interesting to talk with him about it in depth.

Jax, can you ask him if he enjoys arnold palmers? I know this isn't a "ask the band" thread, but it'd really put my mind at ease if i knew one of the most talented bands in the states was fueled by the delightful concoction of Iced Tea and Lemonade.

And around here we have a hard time fucking finding it :(

Seriously, almost no stores have it. But yes, either the Arizona Iced tea kind or even making it yourself... i won't continue to ass up this thread with my love for Palmers though

You can find my rants in about 38 other threads haha.

Any word on more dates?

I wonder if they'll open with Set the World on Fire?

:Smug:

Seriously though, I think PL straight through would be pretty cool.

However, the whole new album followed by Divine Wings....not so much. A great set would be:

- All of PL
- 2 or 3 older, lesser played songs to please the stubborn old-timers
- 1 of the staples: Sins, Sea, Inferno, Smoke, etc.

ENCORE:
- 1 staple (see above)
- 1 surprise song (or just Out of the Ashes)
