Hey Guys,
I live in a small apartment with a family. Right now I have some PC speakers that I use for mixing and playing/practicing with plugins(TSE/Lepou/Amplitube 3) or w/my axefx XL. I'm thinking of stepping up but again I just want small/compact/cheap speakers because i have kids and cranky neighbors.

here are some choices i'm thinking about

It`s funny, you cant really give advice on it. Monitors are like shoes, you like walking in those? cool.

What you could ask, is what sort of monitors and brand have Things one should avoid.

Monitors are a taste thing and all studio monitors Work for music creation.

Plus over the years, the cheap brands have gotten really good!

My personal experience having produced music on a selection of monitors, the only one`s a directly hated was of some french brand, i dont see them anymore, luckily.

What do you like? alot of bass? high reaching treble? Small and cheap speakers have compromises, but all of them can produce good music.

Good luck in the jungle :D

I have a pair of the M-Audios that I reference on sometimes. They are not bad but I would compare them to really good computer speakers rather than monitors. They are fine for casual listening and jamming but your mixes can come out a little wonky on them in my experience.

With studio monitors it isn't like guitar amps or something where bigger directly equals louder. You can turn them down and still get the full range. In fact many engineers actually mix surprisingly quietly. The lower the volume the less ear fatigue.

If you have the money, I would get something that is better regarded as a monitor than basically multimedia speakers. The new JBL lsr's or the Yamaha HS series, or the krk rockits or even the m-audio BX. Much better range and sound and just don't crank them.

Like PD-Baraka said it's a very personal choice with monitors.
For example I liked the Yamaha HS monitors and my friend preferred the JBL LSR's.

The best thing is to have different monitors at your place and compare them.
Because the room and position is a big factor too. Acoustic treatment therefore is important as well.

Good luck finding your monitor :kickass:

I have the yamaha hs-50's and they're awesome for a small, cheap setup. They're basically the little brothers of the legendary NS-10's if that peaks an interest.
