New York Dolls Debut Down Under
by Andrew Tijs - February 27 2007

The legendary (albeit reincarnated) New York Dolls play their first shows ever in Australia.

Certainly, the fans would have rather seen the legendary sleaze glam princes when they were at their drug-addled creative peak in the early '70s. But we'll have to make do with an abridged version of the New York Dolls when they latch onto the V Festival, with added solo shows.

During their short career the New York Dolls were a sensation in the early American punk rock scene, even though they were far more enamoured with vintage rhythm and blues. They dressed extravagantly, abused substances precociously and churned out some of the most decadent gutter glam rock ever.

Sadly, when the band reunited in 2004 they were without original guitarist Johnny Thunders (died of a drug overdose in 1991) and drummer Jerry Nolan (died of a stroke in 1992). Bassist Arthur Kane died from leukaemia shortly after their first reunion concert.
