So for the past few months, starting out at NAMM, I've been bombarded by ads sporting this kid's (EXTREMELY FEMININE, christ) mug, and all these claims about him being a phenom. So today, after browsing Diezel's website and seeing him once again celebrated as a proud endorsee, I went to his myspace to finally hear what it was all the fuss was about.

And I gotta say, though "Take it Away" is the only clip with a solo in it (I refuse to count his "Hendrix tribute," cuz all that whammy crap got REALLY annoying), you can still hear that he's got some chops and taste, and the songwriting is pretty awesomely 80s, which is fine by me. He may look like a total fruitcake and have AWFUL taste in guitars (except for those Carvin-like super strats, which are sweet), but at least he doesn't play awful acoustic singer-songwriter crap or like overly generic blues-rock, which is what I was expecting given his popularity and guitar choice.

I KNOW, believe me - he looks like such a chick (especially with the hair), but I've learned to tolerate it having been subjected to it seemingly everywhere guitar-related I look. And I just checked out some of the vids, and he is quite good, though the bluesy-ness is definitely way more apparent when he's noodling by himself (the fourth vid from the bottom, when he's sitting cross-legged on the floor, for example). If you've heard one Johnny Hiland-style guy, you've heard 'em all, though there's probably more uniqueness there that I might perceive if I didn't really dislike that style of playing. At least he tones it down in his music, from what I've heard.

Nick and I used to take guitar lessons from the same guitar teacher. The first time I met him I was a bit early for my lesson, so I sat down on the couch to wait... next thing I heard was this massively fucking fast solo coming out of the room nailing Van Halen's "Eruption" note for note. I was waiting to see who it was and I see this little 9 yr old come waltzing out. I thought my teacher was demonstrating that for him and when I was in my lesson I was corrected in the fact that it was Nick playing it. Although his vocals are annoying at times that kid's got some massive chops. And he has a very well-rounded eclectic musical taste and playing style as well. :kickass:

dang, I thought I'd never see him outside of the Phoenix new times. if anyone should get a name drop from the phoenix area it should be Carvin Jones.

who the fuck is Nick Sterling?

oh my god. Nevermind. I went to the myspace link. This is fuckin terrible. Who told the kid to sing? He needs to stop that shit right away. BTW, whats with all the solo guitarists singing all of a sudden anyways? Gary Hoey, etc... I mean, he's not terrible like this kid, but, still.. its a disturbing trend, lol.

Anyways, chops or not, this shit's weak.

These guys want their hairstyle back

Ive been watching those Gilbert vids lately... everything else seems weak as fuck by comparison anyways

Hahahahhaa, Nick's is even worse, cuz at least those guys have some body to theirs. And yeah, his vocals definitely do leave a lot to be desired, no argument here...I dunno, everyone says I need to be more open-minded and not so judgemental, but screw it, you guys are right - the music is ok, but nothing too special, and his gimmick seems to be that he's really good (at a generic style I don't find too captivating) for his age. Oh well, I tried

He sang suprisingly good, (at least on take it away, the only song I listened to) and played some okay stuff but holy shit what a face

He looks like the offspring of the Hanson brothers if they would gang bang one (or both) of the Olsen twins.

dont hate
