Chad Kroeger of NICKELBACK was honored as the "Most-Performed Songwriter" at the 30th annual SOCAN Awards Monday night (April 1) at Toronto, Ontario, Canada's Sheraton Centre Hotel. The British Columbia resident was serenaded by country star Dallas Smith, who performed the Kroger-penned NICKELBACK smash "How You Remind Me", at the event. Asked by SOCAN how he wrote something as "crazy catchy" as "How You Remind Me", Kroeger said (see video below): "Get lucky. Stars align. That song is such a monster. It's taken on its own entity — it really has — and I'm just lucky to be associated with it. "People say all the time, they're always asking me, 'Do you get sick of playing the hits?' or whatever," he continued. "And I always say, when I play the first note and everybody starts singing along at the top of their lungs… How could you be…? No. Not even close. It's the most wonderful thing. I wrote a song that everybody wants to sing along to, and it's just amazing, and I'm so grateful. I'm grateful to the song, and I speak of it as that — it's an entity. And it's done so many wonderful things for me. Not having to eat Kraft Dinner for the rest of my life — unless you choose to, which I often do — is amazing." Kroeger co-founded NICKELBACK in 1995 in Alberta, Canada with his brother Mike, who plays bass for the band. They have released nine albums, six of which have gone platinum. With more than 50 million units sold, NICKELBACK is the 11th best-selling music act and second best-selling foreign act in the U.S. in the 21st century behind THE BEATLES. "How You Remind Me" was named Billboard's top rock song of the decade and reached No. 4 on the Top 10 songs of the 2000s list. Besides nine Grammy Award nominations, the band has received three American Music Awards, a World Music Award, a People's Choice Award, twelve JUNO Awards, seven MuchMusic Video Awards and induction into Canada's Walk Of Fame. NICKELBACK is continuing to tour in support of its ninth album, "Feed The Machine", which was released in June 2017 via BMG.
