I don't think NK is COMPLETELY retarded, they'll back off at some point. The West won't strike first anyway. It is possible that South Korea could try something, but I doubt that too.

My impression is that all talk is more about internal political posturing than serious consideration of nuking US or South Korea. The new leader is trying to prove to North Koreans that he's strong. Their leaders are nuts but they have to realize their country would be totally anihilated if they attacked US or an ally.

^This is true. they know that if they try anything, they'll get utterly obliterated by nuclear strikes.

But, if North Korea tries something and the U.S. retaliates, there could very well be World War III.

No, China and Russia are both too smart to side with NK in that situation. Their only real ally is Iran, who I'm sure the US would enjoy annihilating as well.

It's not in anyone's interest to support North Korea so how could it turn into WWIII?

I'm not to worried and can't worry about this. I'm putting trust in our Government that we are prepared to deal with anything that might happen.

Nobody has so much invested in North Korea that they would defend them against the US and its allies if push comes to shove; especially if N. Korea struck first.

Where's the "who gives a shit" option?

Either it's the same sabre-rattling they have been doing, or they will actually "pull the trigger". If they do, expect all the civilians of NK to pay heavily for NK pulling a US (using nukes and/or unilateral military action).

@ASF, the chance of that happening is almost zero. Few countries would want/could afford to enter a 'war' with NK, unless they were seeking retaliation from an attack, etc.

I really can't foresee this turning serious. As stated above, North Korea is just trying to show everybody that they have a big dick too.

I think this will happen. Kim Jong Un is trying to show the world he has a pair, and then he'll quietly slip away into being a recluse after he's pissed everyone off.

Weak actors and none democratic states attack when their enemy is strong, rather than weak, because they know that the enemy could use strong retaliation and a rally around the flag to distract their population from a falling economy. I have the stats and reports to evidence this btw.

Threatening South Korea and other states with military conflict is basically the only card North Korea has in its hand.

North Korea might try and hold itself together by rallying behind the flag in a difficult war if it weren't for that fact that starting such a war and keeping the same leadership in power after they inevitably lost seems impossible.
