Note to all metal bands thinking of releasing material in 2006:

You could have left out the bit about Mastodon and it would still have been a quality statement, am I right?

lolz

I must say Blood Mountain did top my expectations for the band... I thought they were gonna die out, but then they just kicked my ass, again.

(/me awaits several anti-mastodon comments)

Well, they're about to get popular in metal. What else can you expect?

nothing released will top colour haze - tempel

as far as 2nd half of 2006 goes, yeah.

also I am listening to the new Circulus that came out today and I am rather fond of it as well. Fond in a makes-me-want-to-dress-up-in-renaissance-clothing-and-prance-around-a-field kind of way, which is a.k.a. better than all this highfalutin kiddie metal whatnots

I like Blood Mountain, it's a good record. Not my favourite of the year, nor in my all time top ten, but it's a solid record. I liked Leviathan better, I think.

It shows a great progression from their previous stuff at least. From going on what I heard of the new one, Remission > Leviathan > Blood Mountain, albeit each successive release has improved greatly on some aspects of their style while at the same time equally veering away in others which I enjoyed.

Which brings them to where they are now, and it's evolved in each direction in such a way there's too strong of a dichotomy between what I love how they've improved and what I can't stand some styles they've adopted, so .....................

In summation,
a)good for them, it sounds great
b)no thanks I'll pass

This thread reminded me I need to hear- new Mastodon, new Colour Haze, AND new Circulus goddamit. My wallet reminded me to download them :(

good move.

check out that colour haze ASAP

also, been listening to the new circulus all morning. It's great and it really sounds more mature of an album, I believe would be the cliched terminology. More somber and folk-rooted in style than it's pixie-praising predecessor. And the use of the mini-moog amongst it all is even better than before.

yeah new agalloch and wolves in the throne room takes the cake for me thus far. I havent heard the new mastodon, but i dont like them that much (dont hate them, leviathan was decent, but it didn't tickle my fancy for very long).

tbh it's the moby dick/sea tale whatnots and most importantly the brief use of Neil Fallon on that Leviathan disc that gets any enjoyment from me. So, cuz of Neil I only listen to Blood and Thunder and nuts to the rest.

However my Leviathan shirt is something I love to wear, I cannot deny the appeal of their cover art on any of their discs.

I can't wait for Blood Mountain. But so far Summoning - Oath Bound and Enslaved - Ruun are in my opinion, the best releases of the year thus far.

Didn't like the new Insomnium much actually.

Another one competing for best of 2006 is Drudkh - Blood in Our Wells. Most excellent album.
