Pink Floyd released more than just Dark Side of the Moon.

No more intervals, set pieces, or fade out segments sounding just like "The Great Gig in the Sky".

Thank you.

new IE eh? comes out tomorrow I see...should I get it Ali?
Speaking as the resident Iced Earth fan boy on the board, I'd say wait till you hear it. While I don't think it's horrible, it has failed to live up to (the admittedly ridiculously high) expectations I had for it. That said, I'm going to buy it tomorrow. I want to sit with the disc, lyrics in hand, and listen to the whole thing on headphones and really try to absorb it. If ever there was an Iced Earth release, that offered more than meets the eye, I suspect this may be it.

As a side note, if you didn't like Tim on the last disc, you won't like him here. There's nothing significantly different between his performance on The Glorious Burden and Framing Armageddon. However, I don't see that as a criticism, as I thought his performance on The Glorious Burden was brilliant.

I'm much higher on it so far than the others (not blown away like I am by the new Wolves in the Throne Room mind you, but it's a pretty solid release for me so far).

It starts off without much momentum, but really gains steam once "Ten Thousand Strong" hits IMO. The title track and the track right before that are awesome, the former containing one of Ripper's shining moments with the band at the end of the song.

hey did you guys get my e-mail I wrote about the new IE? I can't seem to find it, so perhaps it got lost in the ether?

Anyway, new IE is pretty good. (On one listen thus far).

I think Schaffer sits comfortably in this concept piece and so it's a little theatrical too. This in turn offers some semblance of consistency which I think was missing from the last two IE offerings.

I'm not a huge fan of Ripper Owens. I think he gets the job done, and at times he truly shines (Gettysburg Trilogy ftw), but I wouldn't say he's a good vocalist per se. His vibrato and high pitched screams are a little forced (aka not natural sounding).

The question is, if Ripper left IE to join some other random unknown band, would anyone follow him to hear more of his vocals? I wouldn't. I listen to him because he's the front man of IE, not because he's Ripper. Sad but true.

Yep, I saw it - it was in response to Britt. I can forward it to you if you'd like, but rest assured, it went through.

Yep. With the exception of the first minor portion of the album, I think it's less uneven than the prior 3 releases.

I'll go ahead and disagree there, the more I hear of him, the more I appreciate how truly talented he is. Comes across very natural to me, perhaps because I've now seen him live on several occasions and he's wowed me every time. Any problem I'd have with the band's recent output is not detracted by Ripper at all.

Depending on the style of the band he went to, I'd absolutely want to check it out because of his vocals. For example, if he left and formed a straightforward doom band, I'd have no interest. But if he formed another traditional metal band, I'd have a ton of interest.

Fair enough.

And just to clarify, when I mean "natural", I just get the sense that he's no Matt Barlow.

Sorry, but how can I resist.

BTW, listenting to the new album again and I completely stand by my original opinion. The first six songs and "half songs/instrumentals/whatever" really lull you to sleep (with a few exceptions, like the chorus of "Setian Massacre"), but one "Reflections" leads into "Ten Thousand Strong", the album really takes off, with the strongest part coming from the last half of "The Clouding" through "Framing Armageddon" <----- that section of the album right there is on par with anything the band has done.

let's all remember to post a link to this thread when someone inevitably starts a thread on the new IE album :loco:

"The Clouding" <- that's the Pink Floyd homage isn't it?
