Happy Birthday, dude!

Hopefully my beard will look that gnarly some day too like in that pic.

I am old. I feel much older even.

My birthday present to myself was not dealing with any bullshit today (Paul knows what I'm referring to). Tomorrow afternoon it all starts again lol Lord help me.

I got the Voivod DVOD dvd though so that's cool.

The Voivod dvd is fantastic. Qiute a bit of it I'd seen before, such as the Mtv videos and the Canadian TV apperance stuff. But there's some really cool live clips from early tours through Nothingface. My favorite part is that they show a clip of Voivod live in Montreal at a small place in 1991, performing "Freedoom" off the "Angel Rat" cd, which was yet to be released at that point, and it's the only time I've seen footage of Blacky performing an Angel Rat song live, so that alone was worth having the whole DVD for.
There's also an audio section with a bunch of old live stuff on there that I haven't listened to yet but looks promising. Overall it's definitely a disc that you get your money's worth from if you're an old Voivod fan like me. I wish they'd have included more "Angel Rat" and "Outer Limits" stuff on here but perhaps that'll make it onto the next DVD.

I have heard so much good stuff about Angel Rat and the Outer Limits. To be honest, I lost interest in Voivod after Nothingface. It had nothing to do with their music, just me getting into other stuff. Then over time when I learned they got a new line-up, I totally lost interest.

It is about time I go and get some of the albums I missed.

Well here's the thing.....when Angel Rat came out, it was a departure. It's not as crazy technical as their previous stuff, it's got more of a melodic '70s prog feel to alot of it. Piggy's guitar playing is a bit more melodic and "rocking" than the more jagged, crazy guitar stuff he did on the older material as well. Alot of people still don't like that album, but I think most people can now look back in retrospect and accept it more than they did at the time. "The Outer Limits" continues on with that same style, but did bring back a little bit more of the heaviness and stuff. I think both albums are excellent, though in truth there's nothing Voivod has ever done that I dislike.

The albums they put out with Eric Forrest, such as "Negatron" and "Phobos", are overlooked by many but it's a shame because those albums have alot to offer. Imagine the "Killing Technology" style mixed with a more '90s metal/industrial edge to it. Those albums are in fact amongst some of the heaviest material the band ever did. And Eric's vocals were reminiscent of Snake's earlier throaty vocals in alot of ways.

Most of those '90s era Voivod albums can be found pretty cheap these days, I see them on Ebay for low prices alot, and I come across them discounted in the used cd shops alot too. I think they're honestly worth checking out if you were a fan of them before.

A bit late but Happy Birthday Larry!.....

I've alwasys heard good things about Voivod but never got around to checking them out...can someone reccommend me the best album to start with.

Voivod is tough because they're such an odd sounding band to begin with, and really no two albums are alike (yep they're one of "those" lol). A good one is probably "Nothingface" because it's got a little bit of everything that Voivod ever was. For stuff that leans more towards old heavy technical thrash, pick up "Dimension Hatross" or "Killing Technology".
