seriously though, good luck tomorrow. that shit is gonna be hell.

fuckers ... it's on big time ... driving is already a nightmare, just looking on TV.
4 to a car only going into Manhattan ... hmmm ... good way to meet chicks :loco:

freaking News Choppers are hovering above my house

same shit almost happened up here a few months ago. narrowly avoided by a last minute agreement, but if it'd happened, i wouldn't have cared 'cause i don't use Toronto transit to get to school. suburbia kicks ass :kickass:

So the strike is going to happen, eh?

Well THAT fucking sucks. As if this area wasn't already completely undrivable at this time of year...now you can't take either the Lincoln or Holland Tunnels into the city between 5-11 AM w/o at least 4 people to a vehicle. That pretty much fucks up my ability to get there. You can still take the GW Bridge, but that's where ALL the other cars will be. Get ready for 2 hour+ delays heading into Manhattan.

Ugh.

The Underground in London goes on strike like every fucking month. Literally.

Not quite ;) I can only remember one possible strike in the last three years. There may be some this christmas tho :erk:

That said NY is already fucked in the long term, I believe. Due to the weight of buildings on Manhattan the island is isostatically readjusting, and - from what I understand - the subways would already be partially flooded if it wasn't for the water being pumped out. I'm sure they'll figure something out tho :)

Bullshit [/cough]

Not really, it makes sense. It's a small island with a lot of heavy builings. The lithosphere isn't rigid, it can bend quite easily. Most of Scandinavia is also currently undergoing isostatic readjustment after the last deglaciation. I am, of course, speaking on large time scales, Manhattan should be ok for a few hundred years minimum. What you really need to worry about is rising sea level :loco:

By the way, I should qualify, that piece of information came from a geotectonics lecture, I'm pretty sure the lecturer knew his shit :)

Yeah, that'd be the biggest worry, the resulting rise in sea level. Manhattan and Florida are in a pretty bad position if global sea levels go up by too much..

But the Scandinavian thing is just after the last ice age all the glaciers melted, and when that amount of weight is taken off the lithosphere it rises . Hence Scotland and Scandinavia is going up and London is sinking
