Recommend me some lesser known stuff that isn't shit, and be specific plz (What album(s), etc). Stuff like Camel or Van Der Graff Generator.

I've been meaning to check out "Roxy Music" for quite some time. I wouldn't know exactly where to start with them, though I heard "For Your Pleasure" was the place to start. I actually have that whole album on my computer, just never got around to it yet.
"Genesis" have an impressive discography. I don't know if you've heard all they have to offer, but they are well known, of course.
Have you ever got into "Emerson, Lake & Palmer"?? (Not obscure, I know) I suggest that if you haven't delved much into them you get "Trilogy" & "Brain Salad Surgery". I'm still working my way through their stuff as well, however.
I wish I could be of more help, but I need to broaden my knowledge on this genre as well. I'm not sure I've heard of the bands you mentioned. Why don't you post what you like from the genre to give others more of a feel for what you like??

I'm a strong believer that Jeff Beck is underrated these days. Blow by Blow is his best, Wired is good too, Truth is a great blues/rock album but not very original.
Lesser knowns..... ??? I'll have to think about that. Funny you mentioned it though, I was crankin Kansas - Masque, Left Overature, and Jethro Tulls Stand Up today in my shop. Tomorrow I'll get around to Aqualung and ??? I'll find something, maybe its time or ELPBSS and some Rush.
Wired/Blow by Blow were fusion jam recordings... progressive improv but not so much composition. Still highly recommended though.
Mahogany Rush could be somewhat progressive in a heavy blues, Hendrix, hardrock sort of way. I'll have to think about it tomorrow. I just recently got some Camel stuff and King Crimson but ... well I suppose I would have liked it more if I had of heard them back then. They seem to lack something I found in Rush, Tull and Kansas.
Here ya go talk about obscure and abit off the wall. Im a lifetime huge Crack the Sky fan. The first three albums. They were.?. maybe avant guard, alternate, a bit progressive, rock, hardrock and just plain fucked up... Their early live album started like this... a guy walks out on stage and in a really strange voice, like nassal with a swollen tongue, and says "This band has come all the way down from an acid trip just to play for you, please welcome Crack the Sky."
all that stuff is out of print I think, drop me a PM and maybe I can mail you out a CD collection of Crack the Sky. They released some stuff in the 80's that was more Floydish without the hard driving edge they had in the mid 70's.

I just remembered U.K.'s s/t with Allan Holdsworth. It's possibly up your alley Mathias. I haven't listened to it in a while. I really should bust it out next chance I get.

Genesis are really overrated and are horrible with Phil Collins singing. The only song/album I like of theirs is The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

Alice Cooper - Killer - Halo of Flies
kinda heavy kinda progressive, Desperado & the last song which name escapes now, great album even the rockers but I bet Mathias alreadys knows this.
early pre Steve Perry Journey was a bit progressive but this stuff is hard to come by and I no longer have any. I liked them better then, before they went poppy. I remember theres one song in particular that blew our minds but I forget what it even sounded like.
Uriah Heep - Salisbury - the title track, one side of the album, is at least worth a few listens. With Mic Box turning in some damn good early rock shredding toward the end of the song, a kinda cool trivial point is you can hear the "click" on the old fuzz box everytime he enters a solo. I still play it every once in awhile. Its really a great piece of work.
Some people would say Im crazy but I still get off on many of the tracks from Chicagos first two albums. Chicago Transit Authority and Chicago II, instrumentally, that band with the horn arrangements and certain compositions and instrumental sections of other songs had a thing of their own going on.
Along the same lines, while maybe not "progressive" as much as a wall of big band sound, a song I feel is a must have for an occasional listen is "Vehical" by "Ides of March"
The origional Jesus Christ Superstar with Ian Gillan, Murry Head and Yvonne Elliman has its moments
Gentle Giant & The Nice, their names ring a bell but I remember nothing....

Yeah, know all those. That Uriah Heep album is probably their worst album, but I love it. The Park and Time to Live are killer songs. Gentle Giant are great but are pretty hit and miss. I have Acquiring the Taste and The Power and the Glory on cd and vinyl. Wreck is such and awesome song. And of course Alice Cooper rules. My favorite is School's Out.
Yea, we rarely spun Salisbury back in the day. Twas always Look At Yourself or D&W or Magicians Birthday but today I love that song Salisbury. I also like Lady in Black kinda folky, great story lyrics nice vocal job....... I think its a two chord song though... lol. For me the decline started after D&W but it was all over after Sweet Freedom and that didnt stur me much as it was.

What about Crack the Sky - (1st)self titled and (3rd)Safety in Numbers, most noticably the song "Nuclear Apathy"? If you like the Beatles you might be alright with their 2nd - Animal Notes, didnt rock very hard but was way out of the box songs. It was a concept album about running away from life, mainly a woman apparently and becoming a Mounty of all things....lol. It pretty interesting to me because they came up with some stuff I'd never heard anything like before. They pretty much went to shit after Saftey in Numbers('78). "Raw" from early mid 80's has like two songs I like but the progressive part was long gone as was most of the band. Album "From the Greenhouse"(maybe '87) was pretty good, that was the Floydish sounding one with some of the old members back. Dont judge from crappy youtube vids if you go there, not even a hint of what they were in the late 70's.
Where do you stand on Kansas? Theres some killer tunes there if you know which ones.

Brand X-jazz fusion...Phil Collins side project with great musicians...this is when Collins still drummed like he cared Percy Jones on bass is one of the best..period.
Happy the Man-mid 70's they put out two albums..half instrumental reunions now and then.
There's other stuff as well..depends on how you like your prog, melodic, fusion, more spacey....etc.

Atomic Rooster rule but Im not sure that's exactly what Mathias is looking for. Please correct me if I am wrong. Mat, are you looking for more, somewhat, harder stuff like Atomic Rooster, Captain Beyond, etc...or lighter stuff like Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc?
