Im sure that you've all heard of the band Agalloch from the US. I, personally, think the emotions their music gives off is not of this earth; a la Mr. V's stuff. Thoughts on this everybody.

I've heard OF them many times, but I've never actually listened to anything. Seems a good time to start though...
Recommendations on where to start?

Album-wise I'd recommend to start with "The Mantle". Their first one "Pale Folklore" is still quite raw and the latest one "Ashes against the grain" has a well-done production but is compositorically weaker in my opinion.

Song-wise these are probably the best songs to start with:
Dead Winter Days (PF)
As Embers Dress the Sky (PF)
Odal (Mantle)
I am the Wooden Doors (Mantle)
You were but a Ghost in my Arms (Mantle)
Not Unlike the Waves (AatG)

edit: oh well, another great band o that kind -which also resides on these boards- is woods of ypres. too bad I only know the songs you can dowload on their myspace...

Ashes Against The Grain is one of the greatest albums of the year and the millenium. Agalloch is one of the best metal bands out there right now.

They are certainly an amazing band. I have seen them live twice now and they are also really nice guys. I have the opportunity to see them again next week but I may have to miss it.

I like this band, and in very large doses to tell the truth :D
"The Mantle" is in my top 10 best albums ever.

They don't do anything groundbreaking, but no part of their music is meaningless. Few bands put out music that has purpose 100% of the time.
Vintersorg is among these few as well.

i love the mantle and pale folklore, and i also have the original of Stone Wind and Pillor, they are truly great. a little bit too artsy maybe, but thats ok

Well said my friend! Falling Snow is the song I have been listening to every morning before I go to work. The song somehow gives me drive and ambition. Its hard to explain but Agalloch songs does stuff like that...so does Mr. V's.

You pretty much wrapped up this thread with that. Its a good feeling when you are amongst others who feel the same way about the same music. Beautiful indeed. Nuff respect to everyone!!:kickass: :kickass:

Yeah, they're good. They sound a lot like Kveldssanger by Ulver at times though. I mean, really.. to the point where even on The Mantle they do the whole feet through snow thing (which I guess is actually Nattens Madrigal). They're good, but they're no Vintersorg.

I listened to their myspace songs and I thought it was good, but too much blackmetal for my taste. Not too fond of the vocals.

I listened to The Mantle once, not too closely, and didn't think it was all that special, but I kinda got the feeling that I'll need to listen to it a few more times to really get to know all its secrets. That sounded retarded. W/e

OK, so now I've listened to "Pale Folklore" a few times. Mixed feelings though... They do make some interesting music from time to time, and it's all emotional, weird and cool at the same time. But the vocals left me totally unsatisfied. Not sure if there's more clean vocals on other Agalloch-records, but this one had to few, and besides, the "growling" or what the hell it's called sounded really weak.
I should try and give it a few more spins though, and maybe buy "The Mantle" as well...?

When I listened to them for the first time I thought like "oh my god, this sucks, weak standardish depressive music" but then I gave them some other tries and the music got better the more I listened to them.

Well if you aren't a big fan of the vocals from Pale Folklore you might not like The Mantle. Although in my opinion they stepped up the writting on the Mantle, so maybe test a few songs on the internet and then decide.
