Opeth countdown (Annihilat0r Version)

Well when I read Arasmas' countdown I liked the idea a lot, so I decided to do mine. I will post 5 songs for each post, similar to the way Arasmas did it (and he did an awesome job)

I think my taste is similar to Arasmas'; but a lot of the forum favorites aren't my top tracks so I think you'll be throwing rocks at me after a short time, lol

I haven't gotten into Orchid and thus I haven't listed its songs here, if I did they would be all at the bottom, but everyone knows they're not bad songs, I just couldn't get into any of them

so I have 56 songs to list, you'll see the bottom ones are highly similar to arasmas' list

not really a song, but had to be included, and thus it's at the very bottom of the list

not really a song either.

#55 - Atonement

YES, this is the worst Opeth song. First of all I absolutely hate the vocal effect used to Mikael's voice, it sounds like there's water in his throat, I can't stand it. This song is just some idea that shouldn't have made to the album

#54 - Porcelain Heart

See the thread I made about this song, basically it suffers from being 8 minutes long but not having good enough stuff in it. All mediocre, and 8 minutes of slow mediocrity equals boring (although the intro riff and the lullaby parts are cool)

#53 - Weakness

This songs' sucktitude wouldn't be so noticed if it wasn't placed at the worst place it could have been. ENDING CREDITS is named ENDING CREDITS for a reason and it was a perfect ending for the album, not this abominable collection of wavelengths.

Well personally I'd rather listen to Prologue, Madrigal and Atonement than PH, but makes sense so far.

I don't get why Atonement is so hated. The main riff is kewl.

Weakness is one of my favorite soft Opeth tunes. I think the atmospheric feeling of the whole song is incredible.

Same can be said for Atonement... although to a lesser extent.

#52 - Coil

Not good enough. The acoustic composition (melody) is rather boring and it gets good only in the "and I can see you" parts (due to Per's keyboards mostly), but in those parts the lyrics suck so hard it more than offsets any good music. The passage to Heir Apparent is great, though

#51 - Patterns in the Ivy

This is actually a good passage, but still only a passage, so I can't rate it much higher. No way it's unpleasant to listen to or anything

#50 - The Grand Conjuration

There shouldn't be verses and choruses for 10 minute songs, especially if the verse riff is a watered down version of the chorus riff and if the chorus riff itself isn't super innovative in the first place. The lyrics are OK but the effect (such as distant roars and whispers) are just cheesy and lower the standard of the song. Still, the solo is very good (at least different) and the GRAND CONJURATION part might be the most brutal thing Opeth has ever done. A pity the song itself is too long and boring. I never feel the urge to listen to this song

This is alike Patterns in the Ivy but has a lead I like a lot, so it ranks above Patterns

Arasmas has kind of a rep around here being, y'know, Arasmas-y and a know-all. Meaning his list was pretty interesting. Haven't been here long, but I don't think you've got the same rep as he does. Not to say you aren't well know/liked... just that this thread doesn't really have... the same merits? Didn't mean to sound so harsh earlier, was probably in a bad mood.
