Opus Majestic. Hmm, the band name doesn’t leave much about the band’s style to the imagination, does it? And Pain Of God… I guess religiously themed lyrics are also the order of the day!

Well, the band is aptly titled indeed, playing mid-paced symphonic black metal. Slightly tinny, but melodic guitars are low in the mix, yet create effective momentum for the overlying synths. These are prominent, as you may expect, but fall firmly in the Emperor school of atmospheric symphonics, rather than creating more elaborate melodies. The vocals are an unforgiving witch scream, highly effective, especially in quieter sections. A more varied performance would be a welcome addition, yet the shrieks don’t become tiresome. One song features guest female vocals, which play a similar role to the keys. The bass, as often is the case with such a style, is far from prominent. The drums are well performed and tight.

All of this makes for a solid release, from a young band. There is nothing revolutionary to be found on The Pain Of God, yet decent songs and effective atmosphere suggest a promising future. One for symphonic black fans, and also, perhaps, those with an interest in Christian metal.

7/10
