I read this weekend that the origin of headbanging was when bassist Rudy Sarzo quit quiet riot and joined his ex riot mate Randy Rhoads in Ozzy Osbourne's band, that Ozzy wouldn't let him place his foot on the monitors, or get in front of Ozzy on stage. In fact, they would tape a square on the stage floor and Rudy had to stay within it. Without being able to move around much, he started flailing himself up and down. As he said in the book, "Half the time I was looking at the sky, and half at the floor..."
