I ran into this on the web by accident. Interesting...

I like it better than the final artwork, where you find it? :headbang:

That would have been a better cover....

I disagree. This may sound strange, but I believe the cover is way too "Satanic" for Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell. Anybody who is a fan of the band or read interviews with them knows that they use the occult as a metaphor for many things and are not an anti-christian band.
The original illustration shown in this thread with the Jesus figure in flesh tones is just too direct. The cover for The Devil You Know disguised it somewhat with the red wash over the image as to be a bit more subtle.

I also believe you're right on this matter from the band marketing point of view.

Personally I would have like better the original painting, after all it's not as blasphemous as Astral Doors debut album cover, or "Holy Diver" cover. And Black Sabbath wasn't very subtle with the "Born Again" cover :Smokedev:

I'd say that a giant minotaur drowning a preacher is less blasphemous than a giant Satan wielding a beheaded nail-filled Jesus as a torch.

A matter of perspective, you see a
beheaded nail-filled Jesus as a torch
. I just see a human body nail-filled, you assume is Jesus because of the nails in the palms of the head, I don't. Likewise the broken corpses in "Hell Awaits" cover, just human corpses unlike the artwork of "Christ Illusion" which is pretty direct.

Going through your point of view then TDYK cover is less blasphemous than "To Mega Therion" cover which by the way is a H.R. Giger painting ("Satan I"), since there the crucifix is fully depicted and therefore there's no doubt about the character involved.

Just like music, perception of about paintings is always in the eye of the beholder ;)

I don't think the one they used really suits them either.

I thought the same when I first saw it, but maybe these guys just don't give a damn anymore. In anycase the fan base for the band was already established and the hype of the album was high so I doubt the artwork would have affected their sellings or image.

Oh no, I liked the album. I'm just saying though, the cover was rather bland. I think something like Through the Mirror would have suited them perfectly - especially with the title "The Devil You Know"

Nah, TTM artwork looks like something for Sentenced or Poisonblack :p.

I believed you thought the artwork was too strong for them, my bad. I think that actually a striking yet soft image was "Heaven And Hell", or something obscure like the debut, "Headless Cross", or "Cross Purposes". On the other hand "Tyr", "Born Again" and "Dehumanizer" had good artwork related to the title of the album. "Sabotage" was pretty witty too IMO.
