Google Trends is a very interesting way to see how popular a band is - by seeing how much it's searched for on Google (and how headline-worthy they are in the news.) You can graph multiple keyword phrases on the same axis, check out this example (interesting in light of Andy's recent productions):

http://www.google.com/trends?q=arch+enemy,+nevermore,+megadeth,+opeth&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all

Or if you want to puke:

http://www.google.com/trends?q=opeth,+my+chemical+romance&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all

This, to me, is more meaningful in some ways than SoundScan figures. This really shows how many people are aware of (or are interested in) a band. It's particularly interesting how erratic the curves are for mainstream artists like My Chemical Romance, and how stable they are for career artists like Opeth (even though they are getting less searches.)

The only problem is that some phrases are used in other contexts - the perfect example is "Emperor".

Google Trends - Emperor

There's plenty of results, but you only have to look at the news stories to see it doesn't mean anything for the popularity of the band. If you were in a band called "The", it would crown you not only the most popular BAND in the World, but the most popular ANYTHING.
