Overkill "New Videos"

Can't wait to see them in September!!! Here's couple of new songs from their latest release.

years ago I started a thread saying that Overkill would be a good fit for ProgPower, and I caught about 12 pages of flaming for it, and now everyone is so excited to see them, and I am super bummed cause this is the first PP that I can not make it too in almost 8 years :waah::waah::waah:
 
Holy shit this is relentless. I have to say, Overkill really are on a tear of amazing material. They haven't released a bad album ever...and it's been quite a long time since they even released something of questionable quality either.

I think Immortalis, Ironbound, and Electric Age were all monster albums...it doesn't sound like they've lost a beat. The bass groove that leads into the rockin' part at 2:20-ish in "Armorist" is just addictive, and classic Overkill. Wow.

Feel your pain but I lucked out when a local show was announced. Got my ticket :worship: Not crazy about the venue but that's a small concern. Like Death Angel, it's the first time they ever played in my neck of the woods.
 
Overkill is an example of how a band can actually continue to release strong material regardless of how many years they've been around. I have to be honest, I'm looking most forward to their set, even compared to JOP's Streets rendition. A lot of that has to do with the fact that I've never seen Overkill live though.

I'll be honest, I never took much of a listen to them until Ironbound. I LOVED that album and then dug into their other stuff. Nowadays I'd have to say they're probably my favorite thrash band. Still waiting on my copy of the new one though as somehow Amazon lost it in transit.
 
Fan since I bought Taking Over on vinyl back in 1987. That artwork was certainly eye catching. Really enjoyed finally seeing them live last year.

Any time Overkill has a new record coming out, it's a good time. They're consistently solid and never disappoint. That having been said, after listening to the record many times in the past couple of weeks I have to say I'm struggling to hear what you're hearing there. To my ears, there's been more than a couple of records in the past 15 years that have stronger hooks and more interesting embellishments than anything on the new record.

I can listen to WDA from start to finish with a big grin on my face. I love the sound that they've honed. As a Jersey-born kid raised on heavy/thrash music since before I had a choice in the matter, I love the attitude they continue to bring on the new record. I just fucking love that shit. But on the new record, I'm not hearing anything I haven't heard on Overkill records before. For me, most of the records in the past 15 years have edged-out WDA a bit when it comes to interesting songwriting.

They're getting a lot of praise for the new record, and they certainly the deserve positive attention. I certainly would never put "Overkill release" and "weak" in the same sentence. They earn my respect every time they put out a record or put on a show, and I think they're going to pleasantly surprise a lot of people in Atlanta.

But I'm just a little puzzled, because I know you're not one prone to hyperbole and because I'm used to agreeing with your judgement in your posts pretty consistently. Maybe after a few more listens I'll start to hear what you're hearing on the disc. But then again, with Overkill I've never had to work at it before. *shrug*

In all honesty, I would take my praise of the new Overkill record, with respect to their entire discography, with a grain of salt. I've not been the most dedicated Overkill fan on the planet. Although I've been a fan since Taking Over (one of my all-time favorite records), I stopped following the band in a serious way after I Hear Black and didn’t get back into them in a big way until Immortalis. So there are records in between that I can’t offer an insightful comparison to. My original comment should be more accurately stated, this is the best release I’ve heard from them since Years of Decay.

That said, I really like this record. I love the production, I love DD’s bass sound, I like the lyrics, I like the pacing, and I just like the band’s overall headspace.

Ah, gotcha. Well, they released some damn fine records (IMO) while you weren't looking. From the Underground and Below is a great disc and a lot of fun to listen to. Necroshine was my favorite Overkill album since Horrorscope, with Bloodletting right on its heals. Those two remain the pinnacle of post-Horrorscope Overkill for me, and they've had some strong releases since then too.

My top 3 all-time favorite Overkill records are Taking Over, Years of Decay and Horrorscope which are 27, 25 and 23 years old respectively. It's a real testament to the strength of their entire discography that if they were to (hypothetically) skip all 3 of those records in a live set and play their entire set with songs from just the past 15 years, I'd still very much leave the show perfectly satisfied. I can't think of any other band in my collection that I can say the same thing about.

Seeing them 'kill on the ProgPower stage is going to be so awesome.

Admittedly, I'm one of those people who's guilty of constantly (if not somewhat obsessively) chasing current releases, rather than digging into band's back catalogs.

We're seeing them on Friday at PP, then 6 days later on the following Thursday in Dallas. It's going to be a neck-breaking kind of week. :)
