Parkway Drive set to record with the guy that did...The Melvins?

No Care Ever
"Australian metalcore band Parkway Drive will enter the studio this month to begin recording a new full-length. Written during the past six months, the effort will be recorded in Los Angeles, California with producer Joe Barresi (Queens Of The Stone Age, Melvins) at the helm. A mid-2010 release via Epitaph Records is expected."

Some of his other bands include Weezer, Tool, Powerman 5000, Bad Religion.

Just struck me as an odd choice to go with...

Either parkway drive is selling out on this release, or they are going to have an....interesting sounding metal album.

That is very strange going from the tried and tested Adam D methods (producing etc) to Joe Barresi. It's going to be interesting though hearing an extreme metal mix from someone who does radio bullshit.

I really hope this CD doesn't suck because Killing with a Smile and Horizons were beast.

I just checked out the list of his works and while I've enjoyed a few of them, none of them are close to the sound I imagine for Parkway Drive. I thought Adam D nailed it pretty well with them. Hopefully it works out well, but I've never understood why bands will make killer albums with a guy and then go with someone that's totally different.

Meh, Parkway Drive is already your everyday shopping mall metalcore for the young adult, so I can't see how they could "sell out" with this album. I'm pretty interested to hear the results, though.

Exactly what I was gonna post, but I figured I'd ruffle too many feathers if I said it:lol:
But now that someone else has "gone there", yeah honestly Parkway Drive sound like every other fucking melodic metalcore band that decided to ride the wave once Alive and Just Breathing hit big. Trivium are another one of those fucking annoying "ride the current wave" bands too, ugh.
They are like Killswitch Engage, just with none of the musical integrity, none of the awesome guitar playing of Adam and Joel, and basically none of the features that made KSE one of the few worthy contenders in the melodic metalcore scene.
I've only ever heard one Parkway Drive song and that was all I needed to hear to confirm my beliefs on the band.

Almost every single Parkway Drive fan I've met in real life has been one of those obnoxious "mall-metalcore" kids (no offense to fans here though cos obviously the average Sneap-ster is not a trend following wanker).
Talking to most of the fans and it's revealed quite quickly they actually know NOTHING about metalcore and just like Parkway Drive because it's trendy and hip. It's perceived to be more "tough" to like Parkway Drive than it is to like Lady Gaga or whatever is the current hip dance pop, so a bazillion "hardcore" kids will jump on the Parkway Drive bandwagon.
Whenever I try to talk to them about Converge, Overcast and Botch, they just stare at me blankly

from blogs.myspace.com/trainwreckonline:

While maintaining the band’s trademark sound at its core, their forthcoming album will weave music, lyrics and artwork together into a dense concept that flows from ...beginning to end.
While McCall concedes the album’s basic narrative – the tale of a man lacking direction in life who goes looking for answers at the bottom of the sea – is “kind of bizarre,” he says the concept was flexible enough to open itself up to many far-reaching ideas. “The ocean is where I find the most clarity,” says the former bodyboard champion. “To go to the beach and sink into the water, the sound cuts out and you can just forget about everything. So I guess the concept is about cutting out everything and focusing on what’s inside yourself.”

sounds like parkway are doing a "dethklok" album, an album for the sea!

all "generic metalcore" rants aside, i thought their last album was solid for what it was. It was in my rotation for a few weeks after it came out. As far as selling out, i mean with singing, verses and choruses, or the like. I didn't actually say i thought they were going to sell out as much as i was saying its going to be an "interesting" sounding metal album.

My main reason for this thread, though, was to discuss the odd mix of engineer/producer and band.

Ptc my avatar shot was taken onstage with pwd a few weeks ago.

I'm rly confused by the decision as the guys get along with Adam well and he's done great things for the production on their cds. They played a new song a few wks ago and it didn't sound remarkably different to warrant going with a producer who to my knowledge hasn't rly done much (any?) work in this genre. If anything it sounded faster, more hardcorey and heavier beatdowns.

Massive respect for this band regardless of what most will say about it being pop mainstream generic metalcore. They've worked tirelessly and toured relentlessly since we were playing smaller shows together 5 years ago.

Imho are the "scene metalcore" days counted. I'ts ebbing.

I like PWD, they seem really likeable, but also it seems that they're looking forward to place the band safely in a not so scene dominated area.

Just my opinion.

I would say Parkway drive started a new wave of metalcore.

I can only talk about the german scene but kids were totaly jaded with metalcore (at that time it was KSE going pop and AILD going hair-metal)

then parkway drive came in, played all the small punk-clubs, doing their thing as a HC/Punk-Band playing metal riffs, and a new wave started.

So I would not say that they are any of that standart core bands.

Also I must say that the riffing on both of the major releases are superior to the KSE stuff.

I hope they are making a great record and doing their thing + some kick ass hardcore production (ala comeback kid)

Unearth with Terry date didnt play out that good either

I think they are quite a good band live, very tight and very good playing.

I was more referring to the fact they play the most boring, run of the mill melodic metalcore riffs that everyone and their dog could come up with, without needing to even try.
Generic, boring riffs are still generic boring riffs no matter how well played they are

I just Youtube'd one of their tracks. They're terrible. The music industry is fucked. Given what's happened to metal I think I'd quite gladly sell my soul in the radio rock realm, at least that way I'll be taking the dick without any pretenses of being tough or underground.

Honestly thought I was listening to any generic pubcrawling metalcore band down here. What let these guys jump out of the pond?
