All the chin-wagging in Love/Hate got me thinking about this a bit, so.... yeah.

I for one think Scott Burns was one of the best around - thoughts?

EDIT: Also, fuck keyboards. This must be the third or fourth thread I've started with a fail title because of my keyboard.

Scott Burns was the man for me. He had a major influence on the sound of all the old school death metal records (and band's) I love so much...

In terms of modern day producers I really like Erik Rutan - He knows his shit when it comes to death metal. His work has received some negative criticism though, especially on Vital Remains' Icons of Evil record. Which I think sounds absolutely amazing!

I think that whilst Andy Sneap's work is good (See Onslaught's "Killing Peace" and Testament's "The Gathering"), he's a little overrated as a producer. He's great, don't get me wrong, but people like Russ and Scott did a far better job for the most part.

Also, Devin Townsend's 'wall of noise' sound deserves an honourary mention for being awesome (in most cases).

Scott Burns is the only one mentioned that i like. Allthe other guys KILL their recordings with triggers. I wouldnt called all of them producers aswell, most of them are engineers and the band produce themselves. That was the case with Scott Burns for most of the time. A reason i dont like Rick Ruben is that hes a producer that doesnt even do his job propperly as somebody who should produce musical work with a band.

If we're heading for producers in the traditional sense. Lars Ulrich would be one of my favourites. His arrangements and work with Metallica since the start has been fantastic and it really shines through. Some people wonder how Lars has an input into Metallica songs, but this is it. Hes a full on mastermind when it comes to song writing on the whole. If/when Metallica finish, i hope he takes up producing other bands because he is fantastic.

One producer/engineer all the UK Thrash bands seem to be going for is Scott Atkins... Why? That man produces the worst and most dull triggered sound on the planet. I dont like the way triggers are used now, its just full on lazy! If your drum sound is shit, sort it out at the fucking source and dont try to polish a fucking turd. Fucking arsehole producers.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to say that Bloodbrawl's sound engineer Rob (no one knows his second name, it's presumably 'God') at Yellowarch Studios is one of the best we've ever worked with, ever. Seriously, the guy is a fucking legend.

I don't really like the production of the first four Metallica albums, the low end is so poor. I thought most of the production was just James and Lars fighting to make their instruments sound the best.

Russ Russell is one of my favourite modern producers, he did an amazing job on the latest Napalm Death album, and the production on Infected Nations was pretty good, although didn't Ol play a big part in that production?

No thats engineering. A producer is something else. But with metal you tend to have producers that do both. But in Metallicas case, it made lars and James produicers in a propper sense. In the musical way. Which is probably a big way in which Ol co produced Infected Nations.

Then why did you say Lars should produce other bands? Surely bands should do that kind of production themselves

No. Producers usually input arrangements and even add bits, suggest parts and so on. They could influence the song enough to make it a hit. They're guys with good musical knowledge most of the time.

No they do have an input. Its having an extra opinion in the studio. And like a lot of metal producers, they engineer too. So along with a guy recording you, hes helping you out and adding a load too. Its how things generally work, even on small levels. Heck even the album i dod with Covet Chaos. Mike suggested all sorts of new drum parts, adding extra chorus sections and different endings to songs and swapping parts around. Its what they do, and its just like an extra person in the band and it can really help out.
