Phase?

Could someone point me to a good explanation of what "phase" is? I've seen the term used frequently here and a Google search didn't particularly help. Thanks!

Also, unrelatedly, does anyone know of a page or thread that explains the different microphone types usually included in IR packages like God's Cab? I want to understand the differences between an SM57 versus NT5, etc.

for microphone differences, just google them. recordinghacks.com has a good database of mics and characteristics.
