Plugins?!

Hi Andy!
A pro/commercial studio owner told me that plugins for the PT HD system sound better than the same plugins on for the PT LE system. He said that the plugs for Digi001 and 002 are only slimmed copies of the real thing with more simple algorithms. He explained they are made this way cause otherwise the host system/computer wouldn't be able to handle them. So is that really true? Does for example SansAmp sound different on the two systems? Or the Waves C4? Or any plug for that matter?

Thanx,
DD

I haven't read anything that states that, and I don't think that it's 100%accurate. Certainly RTAS pluggins process things differently than TDM b/c of the fact that they exploit the host, but I don't know that accuracy neccessarily suffers. What he said is probably accurate for some fx and some manufacturers, but it wouldn't be true across the board b/c different companies use different standards and different FX require different ammounts of processing (i.e. a 1 band EQ is much less taxing on a system than a Verb). There are even TDM pluggins called HTDM which are processed by the host computer. There is undoubtley some gained accuracy from having an audio card process your fx, but that has more to do with the hardware and less to do with the plugz themselves. Besides, plenty of TDM users use both RTAS and TDM FX. If you really want to know, do a listening test and compare the RTAS versions of a plugin to the TDM versions and see if you can hear the difference. Ultimately HD will sound better than LE no matter what, but the (minimum) $7k price difference ought to explain that. If you really want to be disapointed about protools LE compared to TDM then listen to the tracks with no FX.....In my experience the difference in the quality of D/A, A/D, and summing is far more extreme than the difference in FX quality.

Hi Egan!
That's what I thought too. I don't have the oppurtunity to make an A-B test right now, but maybe in a few weeks. The AD/DA converters don't bug me as I use external ones anyway.

Cheerz,

I use the RME's Andy recommended in a early topic quite some time ago. They don't have the Soft Clip function like Apogee, but they do sound really great.

What are the models of the mentioned external boxes ?

well the plug in thing is crap. I have an m box that runs on Pro tools LE and I use the same RTAS plug ins as I use on my main system. The only thing I guess the guy could have been refering to was the difference between RTAS and TDM. Both sound ok to me, no real gripes.
