why is there such attention in the media on horse-race polls? I mean, polls of the battleground states aren't hard to find, but most mainstream media talks almost exclusively about horserace stuff. I mean, it doesn't really matter does it? Are people really more interested in finding out who's popular overall vs. who's likely to, y'know, win the election? what gives?

pretty much your one stop polling analysis should be http://www.emergingdemocraticmajorityweblog.com/donkeyrising/, by Ruy Teixeira...I don't pay that much attention but he covers the whole schmear and tries to make sense of it.

liz: yeah i stop by Ruy's site pretty frequently - but he too places alot of emphasis on the horserace polls - in fact he spends a ton of effort on them, weighting, examining, analyzing, etc.
