Formed in Tennessee in early 2009, Sky Burial is a four-piece band from Nashville that combines elements of doom, post-metal, and post-rock to create a somber, yet peaceful atmosphere of minimalistic arrangements and passionate segues. The band’s heavily instrumental approach to post-metal is sparsely decorated with messages of self-betterment and hope. Sky Burial's debut full-length, Where Four Rivers Flow, is now available through Replenish Records on 180gram vinyl with heavyweight jacket, an insert, and a custom silkscreened polybag (limited to 500).

This album, the band’s second release, is very much in line with the current USBM sound scheme. What separates this one from others, however, is the band’s mastery of the balancing act between folkish acoustic suites and punishing, triumphant black metal a la Wolves In The Throne Room. I expect death threats when I say I enjoy this album far more than any USBM release I’ve come across (aside from Woe). The first track “In The Wake Of An Iron Wind” alone is a grand journey from hilltop to catacomb, first caressing with soothing “sitting in a clearing” dark folk, then ripping the listener up by the roots and riding off into the black metal wilderness. “Tearing Of The Weave” features a very interesting production quirk, as they manage to shift from their acoustic segments to very triumphant black metal by way of slick fade-ins, producing images of the music itself emerging from the river depicted on the cover. Very engaging, adept black metal that requires attention from anyone who follows USBM, or just wants to hear a great sleeper release for early 2012.
