Line up for ProgPower UK finalised

ProgPower, the European and US Progressive Metal phenomenon comes to the UK in March 2006. The line-up for the inaugural ProgPowerUK festival has now been finalised. Therion have been in place as headliners for some time, but the Swedish metal sensation will be supported by a truly cosmopolitan bill featuring Threshold (the only UK act to be playing this year) Pagans Mind from Norway, Germany’s Freedom Call, Orphaned Land from Israel, Italy’s Secret Sphere and Firewind from Greece.

The festival gives UK fans their first chance to see Pagans Mind, Orphaned Land and Secret Sphere, none of whom have ever played live in the UK before, while Freedom Call and Firewind have only performed a handful of British dates between them. Threshold (who headlined the first ever ProgPower Festival) make a welcome return to the British stage, having kept a low profile in the UK since playing a few gigs in support of their Subsurface album in 2004, and ProgPowerUK is the first opportunity UK fans of Therion have had to see the band play a stage whose size befits both the band’s status and the epic nature of their material.

ProgPower is already an established name in both Europe where the festival originated in 1999 (the event was headlined this year by Epica and Pain Of Salvation) and America where shows have been staged since 2001. It was Sean Hetherington and Jon Hoare (from UK metal bands Intense and Mercury Rain respectively) who had the idea to bring the festival to the UK. “What we wanted to do was put together a bill that showcased a varied collection of bands which you wouldn’t often see in the UK,” explains Jon Hoare. “Even Threshold, one of the UK’s best bands, don’t seem to play that many gigs over here, so this is a chance to see seven well-respected bands in one go that might not play here again for quite some time.”

ProgPower UK is a one-day event which takes place on 25th March 2006 at The Centaur, a prestigious multi-purpose easily-accessible venue with plenty of free on-site parking at Cheltenham Racecourse, Gloucestershire.
