Promaetheus Unbound - Puer
2002 - Independent
By Mark Bridgeman
Decent death metal let down by poor production. Not something you can really help when working within the budget of a self-released EP, but Promaetheus Unbound fall short where too many bands do. If they managed to record the drums well, without them sounding like they were recording in someone's bedroom, then it would pull the rest of the recording together. The drums are well-played (as is everything else on the album), but their hollowness makes seeing other weaknesses easier.
Apart from that, what we have here is solid DM although nothing ground breaking. The vocals both growl and shriek in even amounts, the guitars are a whirling dirvish throughout, and the drums pound at unhuman speed. Second track 'Dethroned', a mid-paced piece, is more to my taste, and closer 'Astral Moonlight (At The Edge Of Reality)' has some phenominal double bass playing.
All in all, a 3-song EP of death metal let down by poor production. If they were in a situation where they could put more beef on the tracks, get some richer sounds from the recording, then it may be a solid calling card. For now, it's a very fine band that I hope keeps at it.
