does anyone know the story behind the lyrics of emperor's prometheus? what i've gotten from it is that its about a king/ruler (?) that built and empire and is experiencing its demise. When i read the lyrics i got this kinda feeling of Roman politics or something, anyone know what i mean?

Prometheus was a figure from Greek Mythology. He was a Titan who stole fire from the gods and gave it to humans, an act for which he was punished by Zeus by being chained to a rock atop Mount Caucasus where each day an eagle came and tore at his liver, each night, it would be healed so that the eagle could repeat his torments the following day.

Yeah, man was his creation so he felt sorry for us and also taught us how to decieve Zues in offerings... So the liver thing happened until he was rescued by Hercules :)

Prometheus is about a man who loses faith in his religion, grows to learn that everything he has lived has been a lie, and that what he practices he dosn't actually understand. An epiphany of sorts.

I think Ihsahn said that the lyrics aren't really about that story though.

I don't think so either. I interpret the lyrics as a kind of social realisation and subsequent disillusionment.

Trying to find reason and purpose in an otherwise unreasonable world, except on a very personal level. This incorporates religion as well.
I also get the impression that it's about being alone, too. The character in the lyrics doesn't seem to have anyone or anything he can hold onto.

Perhaps an autobiography of Ihsahn's?

Here's the lowdown on the actual "concept."

A once great band descends into self-indulgent wanking, substituting sweep arpeggios and contrived faggotry in the place of actual artistic vision.

Greek Mythology is evil. A crow that eats your inner organs for 4000 years...over and over again.

Not only evil, severely fucked up as well ;) I was helping a friend revise for classics and there are all sorts of people killing each other then sleeping with their sisters and stuff like that

No sir, you are incorrect. There is a difference between well written complex music, and simple wankerage. And Prometheus definately was not the latter.

This is ridiculous. Ihsahn matures as a musician and songwriter and suddenly it's 'contrived faggotry'? I'm sick of reading this kind of crap about Prometheus. Emperor's my favorite black metal band and Nightside Eclipse is still my favorite album, but credit is due for the work he put into Prometheus. Not all the songs are great, but the ones that are make up for the few that aren't. So what if maybe he didn't write the album just for YOU, maybe he wrote it for HIMSELF since he knew he was disbanding Emperor. At least he didn't end the band's career with IX Equilibrium, he went in a put a lot of work into a final album, and it's a great finale and I'm glad he shared it with the world. Maybe you need to invest in some real audio equipment if you can't hear that.

I relly wish that Emperor hadn't broken up..

I know they broke up because Prometheus was there final swansong. But what a work of genius it is... from ALL members of the band..

I just kinda wish Emperor would hang around, and release a few more Prometheus's...

But I know that when bands try too long, and too hard, they turn into crap..

What is ihsahn up to nowadays anyway? More Peccatum?

ignore reltih floda.....he's thinks that if a musician shows off some technical skill they can't write good music. He said the all the post-symbolic death albums were "wankathons", now if that's not a load of crap, i don't don't know what the fuck i just did in the toilet. You'd think that this guy enjoys nu-metal.
