for those of you running protools for all-out production (lots of editing, mixing big sessions)

do you:

a. run one large display (if so, how big)
b. run two displays?

i know there's some quirks with protools running on dual monitors, and i've always had my setup this way
but i could live without it

so im trying to figure out, should i go with one large display, two full displays (what i already have), or just an apple display (not very big)

if i do go large display, im hoping for something in the 40 inch range

thanks!

I've got two apple 20" cinema displays....
edit window on the left, mixer and BD etc on the right

(mostly using the right one for movies, surfing and porn while editing though)

I would say one large screen.

Its so easy to flip back and forth between the mix and edit windows when needed in protools. Also you can have all your inserts,volume,inputs/outputs on each channel in your mix window if you like. Again its going to be different for each person, but I would love a huge 40" for editing. :)

im also thinking about putting an imac in my bedroom, for editing off the clock / accessing my protools sessions on the home network

I think he means you can have all your inserts, volume, i/o, pan, sends etc show in your edit window. and yes it takes half a second to flip to the mix window... I used to run dual displays but I like it better with just one. It's only a 21".

i prefer one large screen, the shortcuts really help with the one screen approach. Im currently using a 22" monitor and it seems ideal!

I was using a 17" tft as a backup monitor for mix window etc, but found it more hastle than its worth, i will however always use 2 screens when doing post production, as thats some messy shit!

I used to think I'd like 2 screens until I worked on a 2-screen setup. Moving the mouse back and forth between the two was kind of a hassle. I much prefer having one larger screen and just using the Apple+= shortcut to switch back and forth. You can even just map the shortcut to a mouse button (depending on the mouse) to make it even easier.

how do you map the shortcut to a mouse button?

It depends on the mouse.

If you have a logitech, Setpoint lets you do a lot. Even more on the PC with the Uber-options add-on.

Pick button, keystroke assignment, ctrl =, apply.

Kensington mice work the same way. Apple mice don't have enough buttons and probably wouldn't want to sacrifice a function even if you could assign it.

Personally I have the Edit on the left (22" Dell LCD) and Mix on the right (19" LCD) I occasionally set a window configuration to have the mix stretched across both with dynamic range meter open. Not always.

If I'm only editing I have firefox on the right.

At home I've got one display (the 27" 2560x1440 on my iMac), but at school I use two 24" monitors. I'm actually preferring using just one, though. I've seen some quirks with the two display setup on PT 7.4 HD, like plugin graphics going apeshit when in the secondary monitor, but I can't say if it's a fault in PT or the school's system itself.

so basically it's like the logitech keyboard? I have extra buttons that i can assign single keystrokes or an entire macro.

I'll have to look into a logitech mouse then. It would be a nice addition

i have a 40" LCD TV (with VGA in) and a 17" LCD monitor in vista. the TV can only go up to 1360 x 768, the monitor 1280 x 1024. it's nice to have two just so you cna have browsers / IMs /etc. in one and work in the other. i've fiddled with stretching DAW's across both, not at allll worth the hassle. Oddly enough, Protools i can only use in the small LCD (due to the greater vertical resolution) and Reaper i much prefer on the big TV. but this is probably also because in Reaper i undock the mixer and leave it on the other monitor. you can't undock things and have them leave the master window in protools.
