Hi
I have a problem with PT.
I'm recording drums. I recorded a first part of the song and I have to record a second part. I mean, the drummer records from start to 1:00 and he did a mistake, so I have to record the following part. I have to start 2-3 beats before 1:00 so he can hear his starting point to continue but when I start to record I can only hear the click and not the recorded track (the end of the first part) so the drummer can't hear the right point when he has to start.
Could you give me some advice?

Thank you very much!!

Use quick punch mode. Right click on the record button on the transport and select quick punch. Then play the audio from wherever you want to start (2-3 beats before 1:00), and when you want to start recording (1:00) hit record. You can drag the region back if you miss something.

Ok...thank you very much.
Another thing: If I wanna send the click to the drummer, and also for example Kick and snare with zero latency, (so I send the signals from the profire control panel and not from PT) I have to lower all the engaged drum tracks in PT (because if they are engaged I hear the input signals as monitors). Ok...now, coming back to my main problem, if I have all the engaged tracks muted can I hear the pre-recorded tracks? I think so, because the engaged tracks faders set only the monitor levels...right?

Sending click to drummer independent of main mix.
make a send to output 3-4 in PT
set up software RTN to go to analog out 3-4 in the profire control panel. ( would actually do this as an aux send from the main page of the mixer and then mute the return so you don't have it going to your main mix too.)

Punching in with direct monitoring is not gonna happen the way you like. Either record to new tracks and comp after or switch to software monitoring and buffer of 128.

OK. Thanks for the answer.
Unfortunatelly today, also with Auto input monitoring enabled I wasn't able to monitor the pre-recorded tracks but only the click..... it was not very good because every time he did a mistake we had to re-record the whole song.

I bet the product came out better since the drummer played all the way through the songs though!

When I'm doing any punchs in PT I always use quickpunch.. Just play the track and punch in when neccesary... you should be able to hear all the tracks unless you have something screwy in your preferences.. How did you have your click setup? On an Aux?

Yes I have the click in an aux, with tl-meter as instrument.
I can hear all my tracks engaged, but when I play record in the transport, I hear only the click. The same with quick punch, I hear the tracks recorded but if I play record.....the same.
The only solution I found: I cut before the mistake, I put the "cursor" on the cut (punch-in time), I set a pre-roll time and I start record. In this way it start from the preroll and when it comes to the punch-in it records.....of course with an automatic x-fade

Is this a Pro Tools only kind of thing?

I'm getting a Profire today, and all this input monitoring/software mixer stuff has me worried (I use Nuendo). And I will be tracking drums soon.

I like my old FIrepod with the mix knob for playback/live inputs...

I tracked drums the last weekend. I lowered all the fader of the engaged tracks in PT and I maxed kick, snare and toms in the profire control panel so the drummer was able to hear the click with the zero latency drums tracks he played.
