Question about the bonus disc for Eyes of Fire's "Prisons"...

Hey all. I'm kind of new around these parts, and I figured what better way to introduce myself than ask a nit-picky, anal retentive question. So, here goes...

I just got the album recently, and it's fantastic, as expected. I do have a question about the track "Home" on the second disc that I'm hoping someone here can help me out with. At the very beginning of the track, right as I hit play and before the music starts, there are a couple of audible "pops". Is this just part of the recording, or did I end up with a faulty copy?

Does anyone remember listening to cassettes and at the beginning of the tape there was that little chromatic scale of electronic beeps that was really faint? What the fuck was that all about?

To test the frequency range. You can still find examples of that all over the place, both audially and visually. Ever see the colored bars when a channel's off the air? Same thing....
