hey guys,

finaly had time to do the same excercise with the d112 and B52a. The only processing done was getting rid of a problem resonant freq at around 110-115hz, it was very distracting and made it hard to concentrate on the actual tone, i notched it out with very narrow bandwidth and left a bit of it in as you'll hear because I didnt want to process it too much. (for some reason the d112 picked up this freq a lot more, may have a slight hump in its freq response around that area). Below are the links:

Hey all,

Was curious to see what the e902 sounded like in different positions within the kick drum, wanted to hear straight off the mic, no eq and no comp.
This was a very very very quick experiment mainly to see how this mic reacts in the different positions, I thought that the results may be of interest to some. I have uploaded the snipets for people to download if they like something and wanna cut it up, (again, to create a sample wasnt the point of this excercise).

Results are very interesting.

cheers,

nice one!

I like just inside the sound hole the best. Sounds most natural to me. Nice balance between punch and attack. I can't say how much I love this mic! Great attack response but still natural sounding and representing the sound of the kick really well (unlike the b52 wich just always sounds like a b52 to me, regardless of what the kick drum itself sounds like)

Nice, thanks for this! It is definitely going to help me out. I notice more mids the closer it is to the beater head. Oddly enough I like the further sounds the best.

no worries guys, i plan on doing a few more experiments like this on other parts of the kit, including cymbals. I have a B52 and dont like it that much (for kick). Maybe i'll do the same thing but with that mic, same positioning, etc.
Only thing you gotta watch with a lot of these "kick mics" is the sub bass freq's, they can be quite overwhelming and chew up a lot of real estate in the bottom end.

cheers,

Really dont like just inside the sound hole, major boomy low end there, I could work with any of the other 3 though, think halfway inside is my favourite.

Must be said I really like how this mic sounds, good balance of attack and lows, seems much more natural than a D6.
