Nu-metal easily carries enough musical aesthetics to be deemed a metal sub-genre, whether you like that genre or not. Hair metal is more debatable because it's basically hard rock musically. It's nothing to do with being tolerant or being chickenshit or any other herp derp HHHNNNNGGG UUUNNNNFFFF FUCKING METAL BRO ridiculousness you'd like to spout.
