I have found a website that will let me pay for individual songs or albums by Rage. My question is what songs would you Rage fans recommend? I downloaded Victor Smolski's Heretic cd and was very disappointed. The cd is 85% talking and about 15% guitar. :erk: I have his second cd and think that it was great. If I am going to get some Rage, I want it to be the best stuff they have to offer.

Wow, Rage's catalog is so extensive that its almost best to break it down by era...I'll list a handful of songs that will give you a good idea of the different styles they've gone through:

thrashy - Black in Mind, Sent by the Devil, Don't Fear the Winter
power - Firestorm, Higher than The Sky, Invisible Horizons, Refuge
symphonic - From the Cradle to the Grave, Days of December
modern sound (heavy/prog/power) - Down, Unity, Soundchaser, Straight to Hell, War of Worlds

Only the songs in "modern sound" have Victor on guitar (in other words, those are the ones that have the "virtuoso" type playing on it, the guitarists before Victor were just normal metal guitarists (although Manni Schmidt was definitely an above average metal player)...although see if you can find the rerecording of Don't Fear the Winter from 2001)

Guessing you enjoy complex, well worked guitar, both Unity and Soundchaser albums will please you, I believe. Try songs like Set This World On Fire, Unity, Secrets In A Weird World, Death Is On Its Way. Careful with the early years of Rage, though. You might get scared since it is a totally different sound, specially Peavy's singing.

Good thread, I need to get into more Rage aswell. Thanx for the recommendations Yngvai and Roddoliver. I think I will get either Unity or Black In Mind next, I only have Soundchaser.

Ok, Rage! So, as for me, I like "Reflections of a shadow" album 1990, the sound unlike the other albums, Manny was great with his licks!!! But many Rage fans don't like this album, anyway, I can recommend "Waiting for the moon", "Dust"!

Perfect man '88: 1. Don't fear the winter
Secrets in a ...'89: 1. Invisible Horizons
2. Light into the darkness
3. Talk to Grandpa
Beyond the wall '92: 1. On the edge

Trapped '92: 1. Shame on you
2. Solitary man
3. Enough is enough
4. Baby I'm your nightmare

The Missing link '93: 1. Firestorm
2. Refuge
3. Certain days

Black in mind '95: many good compositions, Peavy's voice became deeper and better, sound rather solid.

End of all days '96: absolute hit - "Higher than the sky where", good album too, like "Black in mind"!

I'm tired, but I think its enough! Of course "Unity" and "Soundchaser" modern solid sound, great playing, you can take almost all songs!!!

As for guitarists: Manny has more interesting playing than Sven and Spiros, but they are good too. For me, Manny had a great sound on "Reflections..."
but on the next albums sound became worse, especially in solos. Victor (Витя давай - Vitya come on - many drunk Russian fans like to vociferate on concerts ) has solid sound and great playing! Enjoy!

IMO Victor is the best guitarist Rage has ever had. Manni comes in 2nd.

Yes, may be you are right, I like them both! Two albums with Victor - good band became better and Peavy sad that he pleased! It's good, I wish them luck! It's like second breath!
