Randall isolation cab

All I know is that slipknot used it on their last album (or wichever one has duality on it), also i read an interview with dimebag who said he did all the main guitar tracks to the damageplan CD with that to get a darker tone.

We have one in the studio I work out of and just tried it the other day on some distorted guitars for a "weezerish" rock band (both an orange and triple rec head thru it)... Gets a really dry in your face modern guitar sound... Also easier for mic placement due to there not being a grill cloth on it... Def will be trying it out more on some upcoming projects...

i think it would be handy in my case, because the sound is isolated, so you can experiment with mic positions and how they sound through monitors. when you track in the same room as you place the amp, its hard to compare mic positions on the fly unless you use headphones (ick) rather i must record a track, move the mic, record another and compare. what a hassle!!! but i guess it allows you to compare clips back to back.

it wouldnt get a drier tone, cause closemicing kills room sounds, but i imagine the iso cabs would deliver a woofy or subby tone for low mids blended with another take

Ive got one and I love it. The low mids do sound different but you just have to dial your tones in differently..Ive used it on loads of stuff recently..

I did both these songs with a 5150mk2 into the isocab.

I did another album recently all on JSX with the Isocab but we dont talk about that one..

are you sure about the slipknot record? was that an jcm 800 through the randall iso cab for guitars?

Why would they do that when they can rent out a sexy plush studio with the hottest producer on the planet?

Marketing is great isn't it?!

you can run your head through a single driver, like the V30. just can't crank your head at max volume, thats where you will need an attenuator.

but hearing some of the samples i may have to give this a try, i got a spare V30, so im going to build one next week and see how that goes.

less than $150 for one of these if i build it myself. i was going to build a 4x12, but for this price, i can't go wrong. :kickass:

well i don't have a decent cab to record with now, i was going to build a 4x12 for recording, but after i factored in the final cost, i found a used mesa recto cab for $450 so that closed to door on that build.

but for the price to build one is so cheap, best thing i can hope for is something different to play around with.

more samples would be great..:) if you open the iso cab, does it get loud enough to use in your rehearsal space?

Yeah, I've been avoiding this thread 'cause I'm tired of repeating myself but here I go again.
I've had it for a year and I'm getting rid of it any day now.

When I first got it I realized that it was not quiet. It just muffled the sound a bit so I built an iso box and lined it with owen cornings 703 and this helped quiet it immensly though lots of bass frequencies leaked out. I couldn't get a great tone out of a 57 or i5 but "thought" an AT4040 condenser worked nicely with it. I was pretty happy/content with it at that point but since I got a 5150, I found I get a much better tone just micing my cab at medium/low volume with an attenuator.

You can hear it here on a song I reamped for Peter from Bloodsoaked with the 5150 and krankenstein. (click the "raw" version)
As you can hear, it is muffled, bass heavy and simply not very great at all.
I tried different amp settings including lots of presence and minimal bass which is what I ended up using.

Here is another clip with it using an Ampeg ss-150 solid state amp only.
This amp sounds great. You can hear the clip still has that muffled/boxed in/lack of gloss and shine tone.

This thing is history.

I'm just gonna save this and copy and paste it when these threads come up.
lol.
