Random question: is there a device that can detect smells/scents?

Pretty much the thread title - anyone remember the movie "Richie Rich" with the Home Alone kid (I'm honestly too lazy to google how his name is spelled :lol: ) where the dad had this gun thing with a plastic pig nose at the end, and he would point it at stuff and it would say what it was by the smell of it? So yeah, is there anything remotely like that IRL? (an olfactory sensor with scent pattern-matching algorithms, IoW :D)
 
There are gas analytic systems... some come even handy as rack versions haha. ;)

And this Swiss dude built something that's not only able to dissect the "ingredients" of a gas but also to match those to a specific smell and to locate the source of the smell:
