what up fellas.

just got this updated mix. this is my band, VINIA, and its our song 'Ellis Denae'. I want your harshest.

I didnt do the recording, or the mixing. It was all done at a local studio 'Boho Digitalia'. (www.bohodigitalia.com)

Aside from the buzz at the beginning (guitarists guitar makes heinous noise), let me know what you hear, so I can take your valued opinions to the mix house.

First thing that came to my mind... Lose the reverb on the guitars...

And it also sounds like there are no OHs on the right side or is it just me?

And the part with the snare 1:22 sounds a little to mechanic don't you think? Maybe he should try mixing it up with the real snare on that part only just to get a more natural sound.

Otherwise I like the song. Good shit!

I gotta say that the mix really sounds a bit strange as a whole. Especially the drums. This really could have used some drum editing too. The kicks are all over the place at times ;-). Vocals, guitars & keyboards sound pretty cool by themselves, but as I said, IMO the whole mix sounds a bit messy and plain weird. I think there are a lot of guys on this forum who could have made you guys sound a lot better!

The song sounds interesting though!

Thanks for the responses! everything said here I will take in for consideration. I agree the snare sounds a little funky. The tone we were getting from the snare wasn't working out too well, so we blended a trigger.

Also, I'll be getting a copy of the raw audio files (unmixed) so I'll be able to post those up for you all to go crazy with. Don't have em yet though.

You are the first people outside a few close friends who have heard our band.

Thanks again-- look forward to more critique.

For the drums being completely raw (with the exception of the replaced snare) I think the actual sound of the kit is very usable however the whole mix sounds really compressed. I think blending in a trigger with the kick will help bring out the projection without having to have it turned up so much (kick seems like one of the loudest tracks). The OHs sound good, it's hard to tell how much of the kit is actually in there. Possibly a steep high-pass will help clean it up and allow you to bring them more up front in the mix without getting the drums muddy.

The guitars sound a little mushy - but it could be that they have a lot of low end in them which is causing them to compete. Possibly a C4 slapped on there and some mid/high-mid boost will give a little definition to the guitars.

Keys & vox sound good, but you knew that already ;) Decent stereo spread and not overbearing compared to the whole track.

The bass still sounds really DI'ed to me. I would seriously think about re-amping it back out to an amp w/ a compressor and just mic it. For the most part it blends alright, but when the higher register notes it they almost "pop" out in the mix.

All and all I think it was tracked well, but I'm not too keen on the mix. The whole song sounds really compressed. I think getting the raw tracks was a smart move. Of course I'll take my stab at mixing it  The song itself rocks hard, just don't like the mix/master if that makes since. Good tone, just not blended to it's potential.

That synth (?) starting somewhere at 0.30 made me check my monitors first, cuz I thought they started to noise around.

Yes, plzzzzz!!

look forward to more critique.

I like your sound at all, but you should try do make the bass sound more like a "fat e-bass", since it sometimes sounds like one of those acoustic-guitar-basses in the moment.

Hey man,

Just got your message via Myspace and came over to check it out, must have missed it somehow. Anyway, I like the song-writing. That early synth sound is almost frustrating, because as mentioned earlier, it sounded like my speakers blew. The vocals at 3 mins have a really cool vibe to them, I think the whole mix sounds good here, but the guitars do sound kind of low. Especially at 4 mins, right before the end.
