RAW Kick Samples to Mix

Mucky,

Very cool - when you have something, would love to hear it.

As for skins and mics:

Kick has a Remo Powerstroke 3 (white, coated) for batter. The reso head is a Evans EQ3 Reso head. I really like the coated Powerstroke 3 for a nice blend of attack and meat. I should care more about the reso head, but didn't put much thought into that. Tuning was low for both - just enough to get the wrinkles out of each head with some finger pressure (see Bob Gatzen for drum tuning - I took that idea from him).

Mics:

In Kick - Beta 52
Overheads - SM81
Sub - Yamaha SubKick (but homemade ones are totally fine - I am not convinced the extra $$ is worth it for that thing, other than it looks impressive)
Kick Out - KSM32

That's about it - nothing outlandish but I thought it had some good punch and tone at the time.

But, we'll see when the samples actually make their way into some music.

Hey man, stupid question but whats the difference between kick out and subkick? I could prob tell if I had time to download the files and listen but unfortunately can't right now.

Dave - the "kick out" mic was positioned in the cutout in the front resonant head - maybe a bit in and out. To capture more of the body than the "kick in" which was to get mostly attack.

The sub kick is totally out of the drum trying to capture low-end thump. I positioned it just off the center of the reso head, maybe a few inches away (it was overloading when it got in too tight).

So, in a way, they are kind of serving the same purpose. But, it's always nice to have a choice when blending. Either one could be part of an overall kick sound, depending on what you are trying to shoot for.

That make any sense?
