After nearly 40 years, my memory is still very vivid of riding in my friend’s Ford Fairlane through farm country in the mountains of Pennsylvania and hearing, for the very first time ever, Maybe I’m A Leo. I was instantly hooked and Deep Purple still flows abundantly in my veins today.
The 40th anniversary of Machine Head is appropriately immortalized in Re-Machined – A Tribute to Deep Purple’s Machine Head. A measure of the impact of that album is the talent that was attracted to the project: Iron Maiden, Metallica, Chickenfoot, Carlos Santana, Black Label Society, etc. Here are a few cuts and the “making of” video which is very interesting. It includes some footage of the Grand Hotel in flames and the band backstage that I have never seen before. It is all quite poignant because it is clear that the recording and interviews occurred before the passing of Jon Lord. Enjoy!
Maiden’s Space Trucking is a pretty straight version.

On the other hand, Metallica does an original version of the B-side single When a Blind Man Cries. Kirk Hammett really rips things up.

Carlos Santana has never played his own stuff the same way twice, so who would expect him do a straight version of Smoke on the Water?

Chickenfoot contributes a live version of Highways Star.

Finally, here is the “making of” video. It is well worth watching.

Machine Head was the first album I ever owned. The older kid down the street used to put his speakers out his bedroom window and crank this record while we hung out in his yard. "Smoke On The Water" changed my life forever and was one of the first songs I ever learned on piano, and subsequently guitar. The "Classic Album" episode on Machine Head was on VH1-Classic last night, and it's one of the few times Blackmore ever really talks about Purple after all these years.

Although this tribute album is interesting, I think what is really going to be cool is this:

This needs to be the final version of this album. Seriously, how many times has this album been re-released?

Just once: the 1997 25th anniversary version, which has only ever been available as an import. The edition that's currently in print in the U.S. is the original CD version from 1990.

Yeah, I see that now. For some reason I thought there were more versions. Regardless, that should be the last time. I hate it when bands keep releasing the same album in multiple versions.

I gotta say, that Metallica cover is fucking awesome. I love how they did part of it like the original and part with their own take. I also am amazed that was Hetfield singing. The Santana one is pretty damn cool too. Gotta say though, I'm disappointed by the Maiden cover. It pretty much is a straight cover, with no ingenuity or passion even.

I gotta agree with you. As much as I like to bash Hetfield's singing in the last few years (and mostly live), he sounds great on that cover. The thing is that I think he has a real hard time to sing "heavy" nowadays and is more comfortable with a mellower vocal style.
