Let's say the drummer can't get a full song right in one take. How do you usually record in the middle if a song, right before he messed up? I mean the cymbal sustain will stop in the middle or something.
Start playing the song a while before the moment he failed. The guy has to play as soon as he can so he plays on the previous take. Then start recording, you'll get all the resonances. Ask him to play the same part on the same instruments. You have to check the intensity and the feeling if you don't wanna notice the trick and wanna have a natural stuff at the end (and you want it, don't you?) and sometimes when a part takes a long time to get recorded properly, you have to check the tuning. Hope it helps.
All down to editing, it's not different in essence from another instrument. Just record both parts, use pre-roll, whatever, and then editing the crossfade, should sound right.
